ankushban, Awesome - Thank you for joining us and taking up your time. How stereotypical finance do you feel Booth is? Are you from finance background or heading into Finance?

Thanks for the welcome, bb. Booth is definitely finance oriented but lately the school has been ramping up focus on other areas as well which aptly reflects in its top ranking over the past few years.

The opportunities for tech and consulting are great and many people end up in these roles.

I am neither from a finance background nor heading into one post-MBA. I am a software engineer from Microsoft and my post MBA goal is to get into PM in tech.

So, not only Booth but all the schools would provide you only with resources to work on your skills. It is up to you to utilize them effectively. The consulting club would be your biggest resource during this time. They’ll conduct multiple workshops to prepare you for case interviews and the right resume.

Tons of leadership opportunities and strong finance skillset is an advantage for any consultant.

what about opportunities to work on real-time consulting projects?

I am a business analyst for a digital marketing firm. How would you suggest I improve my finance skillset?

I do not have an exact answer for this as consulting at Booth is not something I explored before applying. but feel free to DM me and I can follow up on this later.

At this point, I’ll suggest you to leave it for your MBA experience.

Booth will give you sufficient resources and opportunities through acads to develop these skillsets

I am an Indian who applied in the R2 this year, go Waitlisted, re-waitlisted and finally a ding few days back.
With the right essay, Can I expect an Admit next year ? What kind of growth in my resume should I be showing ? (I already got 2 promotions in the last 2 years, I dont think I will get one this year, as my manager now knows that I am going to leave anyway)

I’ll suggest you to first do an introspective of the current app. Find out what are the areas you need to improve. is your resume strong enough? Did each point in the resume showed some quantitative impact? These points will be directly visible in you application as a reapplicant.

Within just 6-8 months, adcoms do not expect a significant improvement in your application.

It’d be better to show growth in the areas that you have already mentioned....like a new project at work with significant leadership

or some improvements in you ECs or some social impact

With a 3.4 GPA (after converting Indian to point GPA to the 4 point scale), what kind of GMAT score can compensate the low GPA? How often does Scholarship happen?

Any suggestions for those affected by layoffs in the recent months and aiming for R1 apps? Does not having a job while applying negatively impact? Unfortunately the industry I was working in has collapsed due to the economy along with US regulations pushing it out’ (crypto industry - SEC is suing top companies) so after 3 months of trying to land another role it looks like I need to pivot industries to have a job for now, but concerned how this looks on MBA apps especially for the narrative I had.
