d = 83,521,y73/441,682,36y. In the expression above, the letter y represents a single digit from 0 to 9. Is d a decimal with exactly ten digits?

(1) The sum of all the digits in the numerator is not a multiple of 3.
(2) 33 is a factor of the denominator.

I have no idea how to solve this and what is he concept? Can someone please help?


I reckon the question is indirectly asking whether y can be known or not.

using case-1,
a number can be divided by 3 if its sum of the digits is divisible by 3
the sum of digits of numerator is 8+3+5+....Y+...3=29 +y
29 +y is divisible by 3 when y is 1 or 4 or 7

using case-2, 33 is a factor of denominator and hence 3, 11 should be
if the denominator is divisible by 3, then options for y are 2 or 5 or 8

we cannot come to conclusion about y using both cases..

hence i suppose the answer is "e"

by the way what is the OA?

I think A is sufficient to answer the question.

Here is how...

The question is basically asking if the numerator is divisible by 441. Since 441 is the denominator. Just for example observation, I dont think the numerator is the crux of the question. There is a second part to the question which we can assess later. Lets now focus on the denominator.

441 = 3 x 147 = 3 x 3 x 49 = 3 x 3 x 7 x 7

So for the numerator to be a finite decimal it has to be divisible by \(3^2*7^2\)
Now back to the question.

1. Now the sum of all the digits in the numerator is not a multiple of 3. So that means when all numbers are added up, the numerator is not divisible by 3. Hence it an infinite decimal or a recurring one. So what would be the answer to the question. No. d is not a finite decimal. So technically A is sufficient.

2. 33 is a factor of the denominator. That means 33 is a factor of 441. This doesn't help us much since we already know the denominator, we need to find out if the numerator is divisible.

Hence Answer = A
