Rose wines have a higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, than white wines, but less compared to red wines.

a) Rose wines have a higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, than white wines, but less compared to red wines.
b) Rose wines have a higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, compared to white wines, but less than red wines.
c) A higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, is found more in rose wines as compared to white wines, but less compared to red wines.
d) A higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, is found in rose wines as compared to white wines, but less than in red wines.
e) The level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, found in rose wines is higher than that in white wines, but less than that in red wines.

@crackverbal

Which one is correct?
1) Donald Trump has more money than Kim.
2) Donald Trump has more money than Kim does.

Clauses can generally be compared to clauses only, barring some exception that eventually GMAT is not going to test (hopefully)

a) Rose wines have a higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, than white wines, but less compared to red wines. Incorrect as the clause of "Roses having higher level of tannins" is being compared to White wines and then red wines.
b) Rose wines have a higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, compared to white wines, but less than red wines. Similar reasoning as for the answer choice A
c) A higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, is found more in rose wines as compared to white wines, but less compared to red wines. Though clause is now not being compared, the comparison of "higher level of tannins" is being compared to white and red wines. Moreover there is a redundant usage of Higher and more. Incorrect
d) A higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, is found in rose wines as compared to white wines, but less than in red wines. Similar reasoning as above.
e) The level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, found in rose wines is higher than that in white wines, but less than that in red wines. Correct and logical comparison.

This question is what GMATNinja would call a gift from the GMAT Gods. Straight comparison, no need to complicate.
My approach:
1) Read the sentence, and first thing that pops up is a comparison along with a couple of modifiers.
2) Becomes simple, now I just have to check for the right things being compared.
3) Going through the options

Quote:
a) Rose wines have a higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, than white wines, but less compared to red wines.
>> Wrong comparison! - eliminate :exclamation

Quote:
b) Rose wines have a higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, compared to white wines, but less than red wines.
>> Again wrong comparison - eliminate :exclamation

Quote:
c) A higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, is found more in rose wines as compared to white wines, but less compared to red wines.
>> Stop with the wrong comparisons already! - eliminate :exclamation

Quote:
d) A higher level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, is found in rose wines as compared to white wines, but less than in red wines.
>> We have been over this 3 times already. Wrong comparison! - eliminate :exclamation

Quote:
e) The level of tannins, which cause a dry, puckery sensation in the mouth and throat, found in rose wines is higher than that in white wines, but less than that in red wines.
>> Finally the right comparisons! :heart
>> 'which' points to the correct noun (the one right before comma), 'tannins'

Confidently marked (E) and moved onto the next question

20 Sec Approach- 1. ''compared to'' is used. When comparing between similar items, ''compared with'' is used.
2. Whenever there is comparison using comparative forms such as better than, higher than, cheaper than etc compared to
and compared with is not used.
