A restaurant has set menu for 700$. A 15% VAT has been imposed on the food value. However, the set meal has a discount of 20%. What is the effective discount for the set meal.

\(Successive\) \(Percentage\) \(change\) = (\(A+B+\frac{AB}{100}\))%
\(A = 15\)%
\(B = -20\)%
\(Percentage\) \(change\) = (\(15-20-\frac{300}{100}\))% = \((15-20-3)\)% = \(-8\)% (Here, Negative sign means its a discount) (B)

This is equivalent to mark-up, discount and profit. Or think of it as successive percentage changes. You are reducing the cost by 20% and increasing by 15%. It doesn't matter in which order you do it. This is similar to saying that there is a mark up of 15% and discount of 20%.
(1 + p/100) = (1 + m/100)*(1 - d/100) = (115/100) * (4/5) = 23/25 = (1 - 2/25) = ( 1 - 8/100)
So the overall impact will be an 8% discount.
Or using successive percentage changes, we can say that what is equivalent to (115/100) * (4/5)? It is 23/25 which is an 8% discount.
