From 680 to 715: My GMAT Focus Edition JourneyHello GMAT Club,
I'm excited to share my GMAT journey with you. As a marketing professional with 6 years of experience, I improved my GMAT score from 680 to 715 (Q88, V87, D81) on the GMAT Focus Edition. I have been on this platform for a long LONG time - so I hope my story helps someone.
Initial Scores My initial mock test score was 680 (old edition):
• Quant: 55th percentile
• Verbal: 80th percentile
Final GFE ScoresAfter dedicated preparation, I achieved:
• Overall: 715 (97th percentile)
• Quant: Q88 (95th percentile)
• Verbal: V87 (99th percentile)
• Data Insights: D81 (90th percentile)
Quant: From 55th to 95th PercentileDespite my engineering background, getting back into the math mindset was my biggest challenge. Here's my approach:
1. Structured Learning: I used e-GMAT's comprehensive system, starting from the basics of each topic. This helped me build a strong foundation.
2. Process Skills: I focused on translating fundamental abilities into exam performance. It wasn't just about knowing the concepts, but applying them effectively under pressure.
3. Time-Saving Strategies: The PACE algorithm helped me save 51.5 hours of course time by identifying my strengths and allowing me to skip certain sections. This efficiency was crucial in my preparation.
Verbal: Maintaining and Improving ExcellenceWhile Verbal was initially a strength, I still saw significant improvement:
1. Master Comprehension: This course helped me build a strong foundation in understanding question expectations. It was like a deep dive into the 'why' behind each question type.
2. Scholaranium Practice: I used this platform for:
- Practicing a wide range of question types across CR and RC
- Simulating real exam environments, which boosted my confidence
- Improving timing skills, crucial for the actual test
My accuracy for hard questions in CR and RC reached 70-80%, which was a significant confidence booster.
Data Insights: Tackling the New SectionFor this new section, I focused on:
1. Time management for the 20 diverse questions
2. Applying a combination of Verbal and Quant skills
3. Practicing a variety of question types, including graphs, tables, and verbal data sufficiency
The key was to approach DI as a blend of skills I'd developed in other sections, rather than something entirely new.
Test Readiness and Overcoming Score PlateauI plateaued around 695 before reaching 715.
Key strategies to break through:
- Regular sectional tests and full-length mocks to build stamina -
- Maintaining a calm mindset during the exam, treating it like another practice session - the less stress you put on yourself the better. Every time I struck a 695 - I was so worried about hitting a 700+ that I didn't focus enough on the questions that would get me to that score on the test itself. I realised before my last attempt that I had done SO. MANY. QUESTIONS - practice was not the key - mindset was. Rida drilled this into me time and again - but it still takes some effort to do it.
- Focusing on the process rather than the end score - the key to actually getting the score you want on the test day is about forgetting about that score in the actual test environment. At that point - any worry is futile. Rather, it is more important to apply what you have learned.
The Role of MentorshipBeing part of e-GMAT's Last Mile Push program was a game-changer. My mentor, Rida, provided invaluable support:
- Psychological Support
- Crucial for maintaining motivation, especially during plateaus
- Regular check-ins provided accountability and moral support
- Strategic Advice:
- Shared tips on time management and section-wise strategies
- Helped develop a personalised test-day approach
- Mock Test Reviews:
- Thorough analysis of both incorrect and time-consuming correct answers
- Improved my strategic approach to the exam
This personalized guidance was instrumental in pushing me from 695 to 715, providing both tactical and emotional support throughout my GMAT journey.
Final Preparation and Test DayIn the last week, I focused on:
1. Taking official mocks
2. Reviewing and refining strategies based on my performance in these mocks
3. Maintaining a positive and calm mindset, reminding myself of how far I'd come
On test day, I followed the sequence: Quant, Verbal, and then DI, taking a break after Verbal to reset my focus.
My Advice1. Have a comprehensive study plan with clear timelines
2. Understand your current abilities and work on bridging gaps
3. Use structured approaches for each section, don't just solve questions randomly
4. Practice consistently with a focus on both accuracy and timing
5. Simulate test conditions regularly to build stamina and familiarity
6. Stay calm and composed during the actual exam - it's just another day of practice.
My journey from 680 to 715 was challenging but I am so glad I did not give up.
I'm happy to answer any questions about my experience. Good luck to all future test-takers!
