Just read an interesting article in business week...

As a married woman(28) and planning to start my family post MBA, these type of articles make me feel concerned about how difficult it will become to balance family and career later. Though I feel confident that i could manage but sometimes i feel may be i am deluded and over-confident as i have not dive into deep and seen the reality yet....Any thoughts from senior mba's?? Is it really difficult??

I worry about the same things, but I also feel that if you want something bad enough, you'll find a way to make it work and be successful. I always tell my husband, either you start making bank or you can stay home with our future kids so that I can ;-).

The truth is, whether male or female, if you want to rise to the top in business (or most any field) you will have to sacrifice things that you wish you didn't have to. You can't be the world's greatest <insert job> and also be the world's greatest mother/father/wife/husband.

I thought this blog entry was a pretty honest appraisal of the issue...

exactly what refurb said. It is impossible to have it all and there will have to be some trade offs. The article you linked to had a woman with four children, and maybe she decided that's what gave her the most fulfillment is having a large family and seeing her children grow. You may have to make a choice to have a small family. Or, at some point, you may decide to let you career take a back seat and not accept promotions while your children are still growing. Or, you may have to ask your parents/in laws to support you with taking care of the children (even if you do not quite agree with their parenting methods).

If you want something badly enough, it can be done (with compromises and choosing your priorities).

BTW, I'm exactly in the same position you are, only older.

And something to think about, with an MBA, if you were to take off time to raise your kids, it will be easier to get a job again with the advanced degree.

Very well said mbagal2011. I am in the same boat as well and having a very supportive husband and family has helped a lot. At some point we may have to slow down a bit but that does not mean we have to give up on our dreams altogether...
Hopefully we will all find a good balance!
