Balanced Quant and Verbal

Question

Hi, I'm wondering how the GMAT quant vs verbal scores are considered balanced?

Is it by the scaled score (i.e. Q40 V39)? Or is it by the percentile (i.e. Q80% V78%)?

Hi Stewart,

A balanced score is by percentile. Generally a good score is the one with percentiles of more than 80. Moreover, in raw score terms, a verbal score will have a lower absolute value. For example, the 99 percentile scores of verbal and quant are around 44 and 51 respectively. A balanced score is usually considered better than an unbalanced one. It signifies that you have good skill level in both quant and verbal. As long as the difference in percentiles is not significant, it does not raise a red flag on you candidacy. But, if someone has, say, 99 percentile in verbal and 60 percentile in quant then admissions team may question the quantitative skills of the applicant, even though he/she may have a good overall score.
