The GMAT sections are available in three different orders: the original GMAT section order and two new possible orders. Here are the three GMAT section orders you are able to choose from:

Option 1: Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, Verbal (original order)
Option 2: Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment
Option 3: Quantitative, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment

U can pick any of them :)

Hi Richard,

The section-order that you choose on Test Day will depend a bit on your perspective on the GMAT and your individual strengths and weaknesses. That having been said, it's advantageous to begin with the Quant and Verbal sections (in some order), so that you can face those 2 sections when you have the most energy. Thankfully, most of the practice CAT Tests on the market give you the option to choose the section-order, so you can practice both options and see which you prefer.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Since these sections are stand-alone scores that don't factor into your overall score out of 800, you'll likely want to save these for last - when fatigue is most likely to set in. Since schools are rated and ranked on their average overall scores out of 800, IR and AWA tend to pretty universally be secondary metrics for admissions - and most schools don't differentiate much beyond scoring at least average in the sections to verify your competency in business writing/reading and analyzing data.

Hi Richard,

You ask a really good question; however, I don’t think you are going to get a definitive answer. Honestly, GMAT test order is really a personal decision. The best advice I can give is to change up the order a bit when taking practice exams and see what works best for you.

That said, are you currently studying for the GMAT? What is your score goal? Do you need any advice regarding your study plan?

:) Hey there guys and gals,

Is there an optimal order to take the test in?

Cheers,
Richard

If you have already given GMAT before then which order did you select in your first attempt? How was your experience? Did you feel anything affected your performance due to the order you had selected? How many mocks have you given? Did you experiment with the order in your mocks?

Hi rtross,

You can also review this article on mba.com to help you better understand the feature and how to decide on your section order. Good luck!
