An option that is likely to strengthen this causal relationship is the one that eliminates the possibility of a reverse relationship between X and Y.

People who are gaining weight often switch to diet soda drinks as a way to cut calories.
The argument establishes the co-existence of diet soda drinkers and obesity. This co-existence could be because consuming diet soda leads to obesity or because people who are obese switch to diet soda. These two possibilities are depicted below:
The argument asks us to strengthen the latter causal relationship and that is exactly what the correct answer accomplishes:
