Two equally sized jugs full of water are each emptied into two separate unequally sized empty jugs, X and Y. Now, jug X is 1/5 full, while jug Y is 2/3 full. If water is poured from jug X into jug Y until jug Y is filled, what fraction of jug X then contains water?

a. 0
b. 1/15
c. 2/15
d. 1/10
e. 2/10

I have tried solving it using no's...Unable to get the right answer.Can anyone elaborate please?

Suppose the water in each jug is L liters
CX x (1/5) = L
CX = 5L liters

CX is capacity of X

CY x (2/3) = L
CY = 3L/2 liters

CY is capacity of Y

Now, Y is 3L/2 - L empty = L/2 empty
So, we can put only L/2 water in jug Y from Jug X

Jug X's remaining water = L - L/2 = L/2

Fraction of X which contains water = water / CX
= (L/2)/ 5L
= 1/10

Answer will be D

IMO, I think plugging number is the best approach to this sort of problem, especially for the not so confident test taker. Bunuel has given a variety of the this in a post above. Here is a similar, but IMO more foolproof approach.

1. Look for a number that is a multiple of all the integers, in the question, i.e 2*3*5 = 30.
2. Now, take this number as the equal starting volume and the find the capacity of each new jug.
1/5(X) = 30, X= 150
2/3(Y) = 30, Y= 45

3. Now take 15 from X to fill Y up. This leaves 15 in X.
30+15 = 45 ( Fills up Y)
30-15 = 15 ( Remains in X)

4. Fraction of water remaining in X = 15/150 = 1/10 (D)

1. Let us take the amount of water emptied as 10 L + 10 L i.e., jug x and jug y contain 10 L each
2. Jug x is 1/5 full i.e., capacity of jug x is 10*5=50 L
3. Jug y is is 2/3 full i.e., capacity of jug y is 10*3/2=15 L.
4. Five more liters will make jug y full.
5. After pouring 5 L, water left in jug x is 5 L.
6. Fraction of water contained in jug x is 5/50 = 1/10

Use this simple approach. Don't even need to get into fancy formulae.

\(­\frac{1}{5}X =\frac{2}{3}Y\)
Jug Y is two parts full and can accomodate one more part, which means \(\frac{1}{2} \)of original water.
Jug X is \(\frac{1}{5} \)full with total original water. Half of it will be poured and half will be left \(=\frac{1}{5}*\frac{1}{2} =\frac{1}{10}\)
