Well thanks for the reply. I admire your answer always. I have a confusion about the start of the commission. I mean 5% is supposed to start from 2000. so wouldn't 0.05 be multiplied after 2000. I mean 0.05* $4000?

The stem says that if a sale is between $2000 and $6000, the commission is 5% of that sales. So, for example, if sale = $4,000, then commission = $200.

Anyway, the wording is not perfect so what is the source?

I am doing an admission course for MBA. I got a lecture sheet from there where this problem was given like this. So if it is written like this, then is the answer A? I fond the answer as $9250 (E) the way I wanted to explain to you.

A sales person earns as commission 5% on all sales between $ 2000 and 6000, and 8% on all sales over $6000. If in a week his commission is $460, what were his total sales?

(A)8000

(B)9000

(C)10000

(D)12000

(E) None of these.

Since the salesperson earned more than 0.05 x 6000 = 300 dollars, his total sales were more than 6000 dollars.

Now we can let x = his total sales; thus:

0.05(6000) + 0.08(x - 6000) = 460

300 + 0.08x - 480 = 460

0.08x - 180 = 460

0.08x = 640

x = 640/0.08 = 64,000/8 = 8,000

Answer: A

From sales of $2,000 to $6,000 he earns 5%

Even if he has total sales up to the $6,000 mark, the commission he would earn would be:

10% of 6,000 ————> 600

5% is (1/2) this amount ———> 300

He still need to earn an additional $160 in commission. He will earn this amount on the sales above $6,000. What sales does he need ABOVE $6,000 to earn $160 when the sales commission is 8% on this amount?

$160 = 8% * X

160 = (8/100) X

20 = (1/100) X

X = 2,000

He needs to have $2,000 more sales ABOVE the $6,000 total sales he already made.

Therefore, his total overall sales = $6,000 + $2,000 =

$8,000
A

Isn't the answer supposed to be E???

Commission on sales upto $6000 is $300 (as 5% on 6000 = 300)
Commission on sales above $6000 is 160/0.08 = $2000

Thus, total sales is $6000 + $2000 = $8000, Answer must be (A)
