Let a, b, c, and d be positive integers such that gcd(a, b) = 24, gcd(b, c) = 36, gcd(c, d) = 54, and 70 < gcd(d, a) < 100. Which of the following must be a divisor of a?

A. 5
B. 7
C. 11
D. 13
E. 17

\(a\) has a factor of 24 = 6*4, \(d\) must have a factor of 54 = 6*9. Thus the common factor they must share is at least a 6, and we have to pick up another common factor within the answers to make their GCF between 70 and 100.

If we try choice C then 6*11 -> 66 is not within range.

If we try choice E then 6*17 > 100 is not within range. Thus the only possible choice is D with 6*13 = 78.
