I picked C b/c it we multiply the given ratio by 2, it makes 3 cups itself. I thought st (2) says enough for a total of 3 cups of ingredients, so basically there is no special mix added now. I dont know if I still understand this question :S

How much special mix must one add to a certain recipe for pancakes to make extra-thick pancakes?

(1) The ratio of ingredients in regular pancakes is 5/4 cups of special mix to 1/4 cup of milk to cup of oil.

(2) Extra-thick pancakes are made by adding enough special mix to the regular recipe for a total of 3 cups of ingredients.

I wen't with E.
1. we know the ratio, or absolute value, but we do not have exact, or real values. moreover, nothing about extra-thick pancakes.
2. we are told that we need to add ENOUGH special mix to regular recipe...anyways, not enough alone.

1+2 - still no info on how many cups should be in regular recipe. moreover, ENOUGH here makes the difference. how much is enough???
clearly not sufficient.

The question stem itself is suspect here.

"How much special mix must one add to a certain recipe for pancakes to make extra-thick pancakes?"

How can you add x gms of an ingredient to a recipe without defining the quantity that the recipe makes? You can add an ingredient to a recipe in ratio form only. Recipes are read as ratios and hence the question is not very logical. They do sometimes mention - recipe for 4/6 cups etc but in that case, they need to specify this. Or better yet, the question needs to talk about one specific instance (e.g. how much special mix was added after making N cups of pancake mix with regular recipe?)

(1) Statement 1 tells you the ratio of the ingredients of regular recipe. We don't know what amount of pancake mix was made with the regular recipe.
(2) Not logical. Regular recipe is a ratio of ingredients. It does not define the amount made. If it does define the amount made, we need that information but we don't have it.

Using both, the amount of pancake mix made with regular recipe is not known so we can't even try to find the amount of special mix that has to be added.

Answer (E)

IMO C, and here's why -
From Statement 1, Regular Recipe = 1.25 cup Special Mix + 1 cup Milk + 0.25 cup oil = 2.5 cups total ingredient
and From Statement 2, Extra Special pancakes are made by adding enough special mix to the regular recipe for a total of 3 cups of ingredients. -- which means, 2.5 cups is for regular recipe and to make it 3 cups, we would need another 0.5 cup of special mix

Thoughts anyone?

Statement 1 tells you that the ratio of ingredients is 1.25 : 1 : 0.25. It doesn't tell you how many cups the recipe makes. This does add up to 2.5 cups but it has been clearly specified in the question that it is a ratio. Hence answer is (E) only.

Can you explain please, why the 1/4 of milk to oil is translated as 1 : 0.25? Why it isn't 1 : 4?

No, 1:0.25 is not correct. In that post, I picked up those numbers from the post above while replying to it.

(1) The ratio of ingredients in regular pancakes is 5/4 cups of special mix to 1/4 cup of milk to cup of oil.

5/4 cups of special mix : 1/4 cup of milk : 1 cup of oil

Special mix : Milk : Oil = 5/4 : 1/4 : 1 = 5 : 1 : 4 (after multiplying by 4)

I was wondering why... Thanks a lot for clarifying that!

Special mix : Milk : Oil = 5/4 : 1/4 : 1 = 5 : 1 : 4 (after multiplying by 4)

I still don't get why it can't be C.
from statement one we have that the ratio is
5/4x : 1/4x : 1x
so, after making the recipe, we will end up with some multiple of 10/4x (depending on what the x is).
Ok. Now in statement 2 we are told that making extra thin recipe is gonna bring us to use 3 total cups of ingredients.
10/4x=3 --> x=6/5

So, mix in the original regular recipe was 5/4x --> 5/4*6/5= 3/2
3/2 - 5/4 that we already had and we find 1/4 that is the quantity of special mix added.
Can you clarify what I am getting wrong? Thank you

Initially i also thought E, But i think i agree with you. We dont know the quantity but if measure w.r.t cups i think we are good.
Answer should be C.

I think the confusion stems from the ratio, if you think about it this way the ratio could have 2.5/4 cups of special mix to .125 cups of milk to .5 cups of oil, or it could be 5/4 cups of mix to .25 cups of milk to 1 cup of oil. So the amount of special mix you would have to add is still variable to get to 3 cups total. Thus the ratio of ingredients does not tell you the total number of ingredients.
