If X and Y are positive integers, is X greater than Y?

(1) X > Y^2.
(2) X > 2.


Given to find whether X greater than Y.

Stat 1: X > Y^2.

If X = 1 and Y = 1.. both same.
if X = 3 and Y = -1.. then X > Y....Insufficient.

Stat 2: X > 2... we don't have any info about Y.. Insufficient.

Stat 1 + Stat 2: X can be any value from 3 to infinite.. but even here we are not sure of Y...Insufficient.

IMO E is the correct answer..

OA please...will correct I missed anything...


first of all y you taking negative values..given X and Y are positive.

1)if X>y^2

that mean x is always greater than y(given condition x,y, both positive)

2)X>2 insufficient

answer is A

It's correct...I didn't check about that...

Since, X and Y are positive integers,

Statement 1 : for every value of y, we need to take the value of x such that it is greater than y^2. => X will always be greater than Y. -- Sufficient.

Statement 2 : Nothing about Y is mentioned, hence it is insufficient.

Solution
(2) X >2 is clearly insufficient. The main problem is that nothing is stated about Y. Y can be 1 or 1000.
(1) X > Y^2 is the same as root of X > Y (Remember that X and Y are positive integers). Since root of X > Y, Hence X > Y.

Sufficient.

(2) X > 2
Nothing is given about Y. Not Sufficient.

here the value of x and y is not mentioned. x >y^2 means x is always greater when y is in square
suppose x is 5 and y is 2
5>2^2
5>4
but as there is no value of x or y not given we can see the answer must be E

Why can't X and Y be 1? Isn't 1 a positive integer? If that were the case, then 1>1 is incorrect and the first statement would require more information.
