For positive integers m and n, is m^2 - n^2 divisible by 3?

(1) m - n is divisible by 3
(2) When m^2 + n^2 is divided by 3, the remainder is 2

Asked: For positive integers m and n, is m^2 - n^2 divisible by 3?

(1) m - n is divisible by 3
m^2 - n^2 = (m-n)(m+n) = 3(m+n)
m^2 - n^2 is divisible by 3
SUFFICIENT

(2) When m^2 + n^2 is divided by 3, the remainder is 2
m^2 = 3a or 3a + 1
n^2 = 3b or 3b +1
m^2 + n^2 = 3a + 1 + 3b + 1 = 3(a+b) + 2
m^2 - n^2 = (3a+ 1) - (3b+1) = 3(a-b)
m^2 - n^2 is divisible by 3
SUFFICIENT
