If x is a positive integer, is x^2 divisible by 24?

(1) x is divisible by 4

(2) x is divisible by 6

24 = 4 * 6 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 3.

We should fill in the squares. E.g. asking if \(x^2\) is divisible by 2 is the same as asking if \(x^2\) is divisible by 4. The 2 has to come from one of the x's and if x contains one multiple of 2, \(x^2\) would contain 4.

Hence we can ask, "is \(x^2\) divisible by \(2^4 * 3^2\)?", and simplify the question to "is x divisible by 2*2*3 = 12?"

Statement 1 and 2 alone insufficient. Combined we know x is divisible by the LCM of 4 and 6 which is 12, so x is divisible by 12. Sufficient.
