What is the value of \(3x^2 + 5x − 2\)?
1) \( (x +\frac{17}{3}) (x − 4) = 0 \)
2) \(x^2 − 16 = 0\)

1) \( (x +\frac{17}{3}) (x − 4) = 0 \)
So we get two values of x
a) \(x=\frac{-17}{3}\)
\(3x^2 + 5x − 2=3*(\frac{-17}{3})^2+5*\frac{-17}{3}-2=\frac{289}{3}-\frac{85}{3}-2=68-2=66\)
a) \(x=4\)
\(3x^2 + 5x − 2=3*(4)^2+5*4-2=48+20-2=68-2=66\)
So in each case answer is 66.

2) \(x^2 − 16 = 0\)
x could be 4 or -4 and we will get different answers.

It is said quite often that one need not solve the equation in order to obtain an answer in data sufficiency. Questions like these suggest otherwise. I always believe one must be quick enough to solve the equations in DS, if necessary. You never know, GMAT sets many traps!
