If each of the segments marked on the board above is of equal length, and if x and y represent the indicated lines on the board, then what is the distance between x and y ? (There are 12 inches in a foot).
(1) The board is five feet long.
(2) x is 18 inches from the nearest end of the board.

In such questions, we do not necessarily need to calculate the value, if we know that this statement will fetch us the answer it will be enough and save us time as well
There are 10 equidistant lines and x and y are 2 of those 10 divisions on the line segment
To calculate the distance between x and y, if we know either the entire length of the board or even position of either x or y from either side of the board, it shall be enough because all points are equidistant
(1) The board is five feet long.
As stated above, we have board length and all points including x and y are equidistant, so we can calculate the answer
SUFFICIENT
(2) x is 18 inches from the nearest end of the board.
As stated above, we have distance of x from the left of the board and all points are equidistant so we can calculate distance of y from left as well and then compute the difference between the two
SUFFICIENT
