If x is a positive integer and w is a negative integer, what is the value of x - w?

(1) \(w^{x} = 9\)

(2) \(x + w = -1\)

Constraints:

  • x > 0
  • y < 0

Statement 1

(1) \(w^{x} = 9\)

Only value matching the constraint

x = 2
w = -3

As we have a unique value of x and w, the statement is sufficient to answer the question.

Eliminate B, C, and E.

Statement 2

(2) \(x + w = -1\)

We can have multiple possible values of x - w with the given information

x = 10 and w = -11

x - w = 10 + 11 = 22

x = 100 and w = -101

x - w = 100 + 101 = 201

Not sufficient.
