Given in the question that Sarah is 21 yrs old ( 5 yrs ago).
Let x be the current age of Sarah . 5 yrs ago, Sarah age will be x -5 = 21 , hence x =26
Sarah current age = 26 yrs.
We need to find age of Larry 9 yrs ago?
Statement 1:
Larry is now twice Sarah's age.
Sarah's current age = 26
Larry is currently twice Sarah's age, then Larry's current age be L.
L = 2*26 = 52 yrs.
Larry’s age 9 yrs ago = L -9 = 52 - 9 = 43 yrs.
Hence, Sufficient.
Statement 2:
Twelve years ago, Jill was 6 years older than Sarah and 20 years younger than Larry.
Sarah's current age S = 26,
Twelve years ago, Sarah’s age = S -12 = 26 -12 =14.
Given that Jill was 6 yrs older than Sarah. (12 yrs ago)
J = S+6 = 14+6 = 20.
So, 12 yrs ago ages of Sarah and Jill were :
J = 20 yrs.
S = 14 yrs.
Given: Larry (12 yrs ago) was 20 yrs older than Jill. // stmt 2: Jill was 20 yrs younger than Larry//
Larry’s age (12 yrs ago) = 20 + Jill = 20+20 =40.
L-12 = 40, then Current age of Larry (L) = 40+12 = 52 yrs.
Hence, age of Larry 9 yrs ago = 52 - 9 = 43 yrs.
Hence, Sufficient.
