A fruit vendor has a total of 80 apples, oranges(R), and bananas in a basket. How many apples are there?
A+R+B=80 and A=?

(1) The ratio of bananas to oranges in the basket is 4:5.
B:R= 4:5
Insufficient

(2) There are more than 36 oranges in the basket.
R>36
Insufficient

(1)&(2) together
B:R=4x:5x and R>36 means x>7
When x=8; (B,R)= (32,40)
When x=9; (B,R)= (36,45)...B+R=81....Not possible as B+R+A= 80; the sum cannot exceed 80.
Hence, B=32 and R=40 and A=80-72=8
Sufficient

Answer: C

Total fruits = 80= A+ Or + B

We need to find : how many apples ?

Statement 1:

(1) The ratio of bananas to oranges in the basket is 4:5.

if ratio of banana to oranges = 4x : 5x = 9x totally.

9x + A = 80

if x = 1, A = 71

if x = 2, A = 62

if x = 3, A = 53

if x = 4, A = 44

if x = 5, A = 35

if x = 6, A = 26

if x = 7, A = 17

if x = 8, A = 8

Hence, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2:

(2) There are more than 36 oranges in the basket.

This statement standalone is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Combining statement 1 and statement 2:

Oranges > 36

The ratio of bananas to oranges in the basket is 4:5. = 4x : 5x

x = 8 (integer values only)

9x = 9*8 =72. Hence, apples A =8.

Option C is sufficient

Statement 1

From Statement 1, we can conclude that the number of bananas is a multiple of 4, and the number of oranges is a multiple of 5.

However, the statement alone is not sufficient to find the number of apples in the basket.

For example, the number of bananas could take any value depending on the number of bananas and oranges in the basket.

The statement alone doesn't provide sufficient informaiton to arrive at the answer. Hence, we can eliminate A, and D.

Statement 2

Statement 2 alone is again not sufficient, as it doesn't tell us much about the number of apples in the basket. Eliminate B.

Combined

From Statement 1, we know that the number of oranges must be a multiple of 5, and from Statement 2 we know that the number of oranges is greater than 36.

Let's assume that

the number of oranges is 40. Number of bananas in that case = 32. The number of apples = 8
the number of oranges is 45. Number of bananas in that case = 36. However, this condition is not possible as the total number of fruits in the basket is 80.

Hence, the statements combined help arrive at the answer.
