A safety inspector is surveying 12 buildings for safety violations. Has the inspector surveyed at least 1/4 of the area she needs to?
(1) Each of the first 3 buildings has smaller area than each of the other 9 buildings.
(2) The inspector has just finished surveying the first 3 buildings.
Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
(1) Each of the first 3 buildings has smaller area than each of the other 9 buildings. We need to know how many he has surveyed and whether that is at least equal to 1/4 of the total area.
We do not know, how many he has surveyed.
INSUFF.
(2) The inspector has just finished surveying the first 3 buildings. Now we know how many he has surveyed, but we do not know the relative area. Whether it is at least 1/4 the total area or not.
INSUFF. 1+2
We know he surveyed \(3\) and each of those has lesser area than the remaining nine.
Thus we can say NO to the stem.
SUFF. Ans C
Elaboration:
Consider the areas of the buildings to be \([3,3,3] \hspace{2mm} [4,4,4] \hspace{2mm} [4,4,4] \hspace{2mm} [4,4,4]\)
So area of first three \(=9 \)
Total area \(=45 \)
\(\frac{9}{45}= \frac{1}{5}\)
Hence even in this extreme case, surveyed area is lesser than 1/4 the total area.
Hope it helped.
