Last month the Green grocery store sold 1,750 pieces of fruit consisting of apples, oranges and grapefruit. How many apples did the Green grocery store sell last month?

(1) The number of apples sold was four times the number of oranges sold.
(2) The number of grapefruit sold was twice the number of oranges sold.

Given that 1750 pieces of apples , oranges and grapefruit are sold in total.

Let the number of apples, oranges and grapes be a, Or, and g respectively.

a + Or+ g = 1750

To find out the value of a, we need the values of both Or and g.

Statement 1:

(1) The number of apples sold was four times the number of oranges sold.

a = 4 Or.

we get 5 Or + g = 1750.

Oranges and grapes can assume multiple possibilities of values (350,0);(349,5) etc.

Hence, insufficient

Statement 2:

(2) The number of grapefruit sold was twice the number of oranges sold.

a + 3 Or = 1750

Both apples and Oranges can take multiple possible values.

Hence, insufficient

Combine both statements , we get

a + (a/4) + (a/2) = 1750

4a + a + 2a = 1750*4

7a = 7000

a =1000

Or = (a/4) = (1000/4) = 250

g = (a/2) = (1000/2) = 500
