Hello Sandy.
I am sorry to hear that you have not been admitted to the schools you applied.
The application process is truly holistic, and committees will look at your stats (GPA and GMAT), work experience, and extracurriculars. Because of this, you have many ways you can improve your profile for next year. Be sure to apply to a range of schools, including reach, target and safety. And it is a good idea to re-apply to schools, as that will not put you at a disadvantage. Just make sure you are submitting an application that shows improvement.
I realize your GMAT was above the average, but please note that for the Indian demographic, that average is even higher that the school’s overall average. So if you haven’t already, I suggest taking it up to 3-4 times. You have nothing to lose since schools will only look at your highest score. An increase can definitely boost your profile.
As for your work experience, the average years of work experience is closer to 5, so it’s even more important to show you have made an impact and demonstrated leadership there. Ideally this will be supported by a strong recommendation letters as well. Hopefully with an extra year working, you can discuss more impact in your essays and on your resume. To answer your last question, it is fine that your motivation to earn an MBA will be similar. You may, however, need to illustrate this in a more compelling way. Make sure you have clear, realistic, and specific post-MBA goals.
Regarding extracurriculars, you can spend the next several months being a part of something in which you are passionate, and hopefully in your application you can really emphasize your leadership roles you have taken on.
As mentioned, I suggest apply to several schools, including reach, target and safety. Hopefully they will see that you have a compelling story and are someone who will add value to the classroom and community.
If you would like to discuss your story or anything else in greater detail, please sign up for a free consultation. It is never too early to get started.
Good luck!
