The answer was (E): 4^5 which I don't get either. I came out the same result as you guys. Can someone explain?

E is clearly wrong. It is assuming that the same ring can be used again for another finger once picked.

It will be 4^5 if you assume one can put all rings on a finger ie more than one ring per finger is possible.

I guess I built in an assumption that wasn't in the problem. I thought that you couldn't have more than 1 ring on each finger. I understand the answer now.
