Another way to look at it is to say if there are only 8 machines working instead of 10, that means with 8 machines, the rate they could complete is only 4/5 of the original 10 machines. So, 8 machines would take 5/4 time longer than 16 hrs when 10 machines were working. (5/4)*16 = 20 hrs

Q. Each of the 10 machines works at the same constant rate of doing certain job. The amount of time needed by 10 machines, working together to complete the job is 16 hrs. How many hrs are needed if only 8 machines working together were to complete the job?

a) 18
b) 20
c) 22
d) 24
e) 26


10 * 16 = 160 (Time it takes for one machine)
160 / 8 = 20 (Time it takes for 8 machines)

Each machine takes x hours to finish 1 job --> finishes 1/x job in 1 hour

10 machines finishes 1/16 job in 1 hour = 10/x job

1/16 = 10/x
x = 160

So eight machiens finishes 8/x job in 1 hour --> 1/20 job in 1 hour --> 1 job would therefore take 20 hours.

Ans B


Therefore, 1 job with 8 machines working at the same rate would take 20 hours to finish, right? :?:

Yes 1 job with 8 machines takes 20hours, and 1 job with 4 machines takes 40hours

It's been done, but:

10 machines rate:
1(one job) = 16(hours)*r(rate)

1/16 jobs per hour

Figure out 8 machines rate
1/16 (Rate of 10 machines) * 8/10 (8 out of ten machines needed)

1/20 (rate for 8 machines)

Plug into original equation:
1 (one job) = 1/20 (rate with 8 machines) * t (time)

20 hours = time

If 10 machines, working at constant rate, take 16 hrs to complete a job, then 1 machine takes 10 x 16 = 160 hrs.. so 8 machines take 160/8 = 20 hrs.. Hope this helps.
