Given that x and y are integers and x+y+xy=0. If x is not 0, what is the value of y?

A 1
B 2
C 0
D -1
E -2

Hrmmm why am I getting B and E as possible answers???

I think X should be > or < 0 .

If [B] was an answer for x, then y = -2/3 to solve the equation and that can't be since the stem says x and y are integers.

Like fresinha12 starts, you can solve this by isolating x:

x + y + xy = 0 = x + xy = -y

x(1 + y) = -y

x = -y/(1 + y)

The question stem says that x and y is an integer, therefore y/(1+y) must also be an integer. The only way it can be an integer (where the denominator is numerator +1) is if y = 0 or y = -2. Of course if y = 0, then x would have to be 0; that case is prohibited by the question stem so y = -2 and x = -2.

Answer choice [E]
