Cool, thanks for the info. Maybe I should say something about not being completely sure that I want to go back to school rather than that I'm waiting to hear from other schools.

I am in process of outlining a delicate way to ask for a two week extension from one school. That said, I can't say that they haven't given me enough time to make a decision considering I received an admit early in my round and I have had about two months to make my deposit.

I've come to the conclusion that I will politely ask for a small deadline to make my deposit because I am still gathering information to make my decision. If they balk, which I am assuming they will, I will probably go ahead and put down the deposit. If I decide later that I don't want to matriculate, I will simply view it as a $1000 loss, which really isn't a huge deal since i'm going to be well over $100K in debt after my two years in business school.

Thought I would bump this, crunch time is approaching for me....

I've tossed around the idea of just paying the deposit at school A and if I am admitted to school B I will just take the loss. Am I stupid for not even trying to get an extension? I am paranoid about burning a bridge if I ask for an extension because i'm waiting on another school.

When is your interview at CMU. When you have it stress to them that you would appreciate a decision asap because you have a deposit due very soon at your second choice school. Make sure they know that they are your #1. That is of course if your interview is prior to the deposit deadline. If not, I would just call and politely ask, I cannot see how it could hurt.

CMU interview: April 9th

Vandy deposit due date: April 23rd

CMU decision: April 30th

I'm not sure if CMU releases early decisions, I think they are one of those schools that releases all decisions for a particular round on one day. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask either school, but I just don't want to seem rude or pushy.

A one week extension from Vandy would solve everything.

I am sure CMU would release their decision a week early for you. I would express this to a dean of admissions when you visit. I cannot see them viewing this negatively as it should be flattering that you want to go to their school so much. That is just my opinion.

I was afraid of doing the same thing but I don't think it hurts to ask, especially when you're only going to be asking for a 1-2 week extension.

What should I say my reasoning is? Should I tell the truth and admit i'm waiting on a decision from another school?

That's what I did, just told them straight up.

I think you should phrase it like this, "I'm very excited about the prospect of joining your program, as I have done a lot of research and spoken with many students and alumni blah blah blah. But I also invested a great amount of time (and money) in researching and applying to other schools, and I would feel remiss if I didn't wait for all of my admissions decisions before making a final decision."

Can I email this request, or should I call and speak to someone? Should I ask for admissions director, or will anyone in admissions be okay to talk to?

I'm not sure what the best way is, I imagine speaking on the phone would be preferable. But I think the best approach is to really convince yourself before you call them that it's totally outrageous that you put your blood sweat and tears into all these apps, and now one school is trying to force you to make a choice before you've heard back from everyone. So go in with that attitude, but be calm, and speak very matter-of-factly, and if they balk act totally surprised and be like, "Oh really? When I submitted all my applications I expected that schools would understand that I was applying to multiple schools and that I wouldn't just go with the first one to get back to me with an ultimatum." Well, maybe tone it down a bit, but I think it's okay to push them on it.

Did you email the admissions director or just send it to a standard MBA admissions email box?

I would prefer to just send an email since i'm only asking for a one week extension - I really don't think (or at least hope) it is a big deal.

I e-mailed the standard admissions box, who forwarded it to the proper person.

Hi,

Will you lose your spot at a school if you miss your 1st deposit deadline or pay shortly after the deposit deadline?

I asked for a deposit deadline extension but since it's in D-1 before the deadline and I emailed the adcom on weekend, I haven't got their reply.
Thank you so much!
