Sum of the weight of 5 students = 5 * 60 = 300 pounds;
Sum of the weight of 5 + 3 new students = 8 * 65 = 520 pounds;

So, the combined weight of the 3 new students = 220 pounds.

Of the 3 students, the weight of one student (X) can be minimum, while the weight of the other two students(Y) is maximum.

Xmin + 2(Ymax) = 220

The maximum weight as per the question stem is 90 pounds

Xmin + 2(90) = 220

Xmin = 220 - 180 = 40 pounds

Answer: B.

The average weight of a group of five students was 60 pounds. Three new students joined and the average weight of the group increased by five pounds. If no student weighs more than 90 pounds, what can be the minimum possible weight of the lightest of the three new students?

3 new student contribute 8*5=40 Kg
Total wt. =3*60+40 =220 KG
Max. wt. =90 Kg
Min. wt. =220-90*2=40 Kg
