The population of Pandora thirty years ago, be P.
Total books read = 10*P
The population of Pandora now = Q
Total books read = 3*Q
3Q < 10P. If we can conclude that the number of books read has fallen. Which means Q < (10/3)P
Options :
(A) The residents of Pandora County used to have more free time 30 years ago than they do now.
Free time doesn’t mean, the residents spend that time in reading books only. Hence, Wrong.
(B) The residents of Pandora County have many more activities that vie for their attention today than 30 years back.
This cannot be a valid assumption. Bcoz, even though multiple activities might have caught the attention today, there is a chance that people might still read books during free times OR may not read books also.
(C) The population of Pandora County hasn’t increased significantly in the last 30 years.
This is the valid assumption. If we negate it, the population has risen significantly (i.e.,) Q > (10/3)*P . Then the claim book sales has fallen or reading of books has fallen becomes Invalid.
(D) The literacy rate hasn’t significantly changed in Pandora County over the past 30 years.
Even without increase in literacy rates, there are greater chance that the number of books read could have increased also. Hence, the comparison is completely irrelevant. OR The criteria for literacy rates might be different from the criteria to read. Hence, wrong.
(E) Those residents of Pandora County who used to read 30 years ago have now not become too old to read.
This option is wrong, because there can be cases when the subsequent generations might have the abilities to read or may not have those abilities to read. Thus, a population segment becomes old doesn’t connote none other than those segments, perform any activities of reading.
Option C
