A couple weeks ago I took my first crack at the GMAT Focus and am happy to say I received a 715. My target was to crack 700 on the focus, so I’m pretty satisfied! Here are my scores and the order in which I completed the sections:
DI: 84 / 98th percentile
Quant 82 / 76th percentile
(Break: drank water, returned with a few minutes left on my break)
Verbal: 90 / "100th" percentile
DI was more straightforward than I anticipated, but only slightly. On mocks I found myself pressed for time more so than I was on the real exam.
Quant is usually my second strongest subject so I plan to take the exam once or twice more. I found the difficulty of the quant questions to be a bit higher than on my mocks. I was pressed for time and I accidentally left the final answer blank because I lost track of time, getting too absorbed by the question. Absolutely kicking myself for that one. Time pressure also necessitated that I guess for the second and third to last questions. I felt a little down because I knew I could have performed better, but flushed those emotions during my break.
One question I did not expect on the quant section was a graph interpretation question. Had to eyeball the bars and there were two answers that were, as it appeared to me, almost equally likely. I truly do not think a question like that should have been included, but I did my best and at least it didn’t take long.
Verbal has been my strongest subject on mocks. I manage my time very well there for some reason. The one thing I am most proud of on my exam is that I ran into a strengthen the argument question that I had a hard time digesting and picked an answer I wasn’t confident in (50/50) and then moved on. I finished with 5 minutes left so I was able to go back and review said question, understanding it much better the second time around. Turns out I misinterpreted a key part of the passage so I switched my answer to the correct choice, thankfully.
In general I found a couple of the long passages to be really dense, which required a couple re-reads and several checkpoints at which I assessed my understanding of the passage. The extra time spent was worth it though, because I was able to quickly answer most of the questions without much reference to the passage.
One of the long passages was, in my opinion, very poorly written. That’s neither here nor there, I suppose.
One thing that threw me for a loop was that one of the long passages I mentioned above popped up twice. 4 (?) questions were asked about it initially, and then 2 or 3 more questions were presented later in the section. This allowed me to save a significant amount of time.
My mock scores were:
Mock 1: 745
Mock 2: 665
Mock 3: 695
Shout out to
TTP for helping me prepare. I felt adequately prepared in mindset and knowledge heading into the exam room, although I did not complete 3/6 recommended mocks before the exam. Thanks for reading, and I hope this helps others! Please feel free to ask any questions.
