Thanks! I took the exam at a test center. I used TTP and TTP only, starting fresh at the beginning of August. So in total, about 3 months of studying putting in between 6-8 hours each weekday on average, with breaks usually during the weekends to work at my part-time job.

poojaarora1818
Thank you! Assuming you mean DI, I did receive a few 2-part answer verbal questions. They all shared a common overall format but I really only remember one in particular, which presented a two-sided debate. The question asked me to choose statements that are most likely to be disagreed with by each of the individuals in the debate.

Thank you so much for the response. Yes, I mean DI which includes the verbal part. I think the way the questions were presented resembles more like the logical reasoning one.

And, I wish you all the best for the applications.

Good luck!

A couple weeks ago I took my first crack at the GMAT Focus and am happy to say I received a 715. My target was to crack 700 on the focus, so I’m pretty satisfied! Here are my scores and the order in which I completed the sections:

DI: 84 / 98th percentile
Quant 82 / 76th percentile
(Break: drank water, returned with a few minutes left on my break)
Verbal: 90 / "100th" percentile

DI was more straightforward than I anticipated, but only slightly. On mocks I found myself pressed for time more so than I was on the real exam.

Quant is usually my second strongest subject so I plan to take the exam once or twice more. I found the difficulty of the quant questions to be a bit higher than on my mocks. I was pressed for time and I accidentally left the final answer blank because I lost track of time, getting too absorbed by the question. Absolutely kicking myself for that one. Time pressure also necessitated that I guess for the second and third to last questions. I felt a little down because I knew I could have performed better, but flushed those emotions during my break.

One question I did not expect on the quant section was a graph interpretation question. Had to eyeball the bars and there were two answers that were, as it appeared to me, almost equally likely. I truly do not think a question like that should have been included, but I did my best and at least it didn’t take long.

Verbal has been my strongest subject on mocks. I manage my time very well there for some reason. The one thing I am most proud of on my exam is that I ran into a strengthen the argument question that I had a hard time digesting and picked an answer I wasn’t confident in (50/50) and then moved on. I finished with 5 minutes left so I was able to go back and review said question, understanding it much better the second time around. Turns out I misinterpreted a key part of the passage so I switched my answer to the correct choice, thankfully.

In general I found a couple of the long passages to be really dense, which required a couple re-reads and several checkpoints at which I assessed my understanding of the passage. The extra time spent was worth it though, because I was able to quickly answer most of the questions without much reference to the passage.

One of the long passages was, in my opinion, very poorly written. That’s neither here nor there, I suppose.

One thing that threw me for a loop was that one of the long passages I mentioned above popped up twice. 4 (?) questions were asked about it initially, and then 2 or 3 more questions were presented later in the section. This allowed me to save a significant amount of time.

My mock scores were:
Mock 1: 745
Mock 2: 665
Mock 3: 695

Shout out to TTP for helping me prepare. I felt adequately prepared in mindset and knowledge heading into the exam room, although I did not complete 3/6 recommended mocks before the exam. Thanks for reading, and I hope this helps others! Please feel free to ask any questions.

PS - I made an r/GMAT debrief post on reddit with the same title. Can't post the link as my account is too new, but you should be able to find it via reddit search. Answered some questions other users had in the comments.

Great job on the overall score, and kudos for acing the Verbal section! Your approach to managing time and re-evaluating tricky questions was spot on. Best wishes for your applications!

Thank you!

PS. I assume you got the official guide and paid GMAT Prep tests? Or not really 😬

PS. Sorry about the GAF score verification. We are working on getting it up and running ASAP. Sorry about the wait.

The penalty for leaving a question unanswered on the Focus Edition is brutal. So, if you had just answered that question, you would likely have scored 85 or higher on Quant and 735 or higher on the test overall.

In any case, congrats on the 700+ score, and please let us know how your retakes, if any, go.

I did not catch this point in the debrief.
Yes, the penalty is huge. Getting 1 wrong and 1 unanswered for me on GMAT Prep resulted into 79. I missed question 9 and then left question 21 unanswered. So you likely only missed 1 other question 😤😤😤

Hi Marty, thanks for the comment on the GMAT Focus penalty of leaving a question unanswered. I just did a mock practice exam and forgot to press "next" on the final QR question. As I understand it, the penalty will apply in such cases. That makes sense given I got 77 but usually get 79+

Given your comment, are you implying that the penalty on the GMAT Focus roughly equates to a three point difference on that particular section? Thus, I should assume I would get 80 if I had just clicked "next" in time? This was my last mock exam and I cannot afford a new one so I'd greatly appreciate it if you could help me understand where I am on the spectrum.

Hello Marray. I was just wondering if you could expand on how "punishing" the Focus edition is in terms of the stats you touched upon.

Thanks for the response! It does seem to the be the case given most people report such difference.
