A, B and C play cricket. A's runs are to B's runs and B's runs are to C's as 3:2. They get altogether 342 runs. How many runs did A make?

A. 162
B. 108
C. 72
D. 68
E. 62

Given:
1. A, B and C play cricket.
2. A's runs are to B's runs and B's runs are to C's as 3:2.
3. They get altogether 342 runs.

Asked: How many runs did A make?

Let A made 9k runs, B made 6k and C made 4k runs

9k + 6k + 4k = 342
19k = 342
k = 342/19 = 18
A made = 18*9 = 162 runs

A. 162
B. 108
C. 72
D. 68
E. 62

Solution:

We see that A : B :: 3: 2 and B : C :: 3 : 2. We multiply the first ratio by 3 and the second ratio by 2 to obtain A : B :: 9 : 6 and B : C :: 6 : 4. Because the ratio values for B are now the same, we can create the 3-way ratio of: A : B : C :: 9 : 6 : 4.

We can let 9x, 6x, and 4x be the number of runs of A, B, and C, respectively, and create the equation:

9x + 6x + 4x = 342

19x = 342

x = 18

Therefore, A made 9(18) = 162 runs.
