A certain company's customer service department has five employees. The hourly wage for each employee ranges from $5 an hour to $20 an hour.
Which of the following could be the average (arithmetic mean) hourly wage
for the customer service employees?
1) $7.50 an hour
2) $9 an hour
3) $16.75 an hour
A. 1 only
B. 2 only
C. 3 only
D. 1 and 2 only
E. 2 and 3 only
We are trying to find the range of the total salaries. If the salaries were between 5 and 20 inclusive, then we try to find the extreme values. Therefore, I assumed 2 scenarios.
1- 4 employees are paid the maximum (20$) and there is one who is paid 5$ --> 5 + 20*4 = 85
2- 4 employees are paid the minimum (5$) and there is one who is paid 20$ --> 4*5 + 20 = 40
