A new wing is to be added to a certain hospital, creating 50 additional beds. What will be the new ratio of doctors to beds if no new doctors are hired?

(1) The ratio of doctors to beds is currently 1 to 20.
(2) There are currently 19 doctors employed by the hospital.

Statement 1: doctors = 1k
beds = 20k
After 50 beds are added, New ratio = 1k/(20k+50)
We don't know 'k'. Insufficient.

Statement 2: 19 doctors are employed and 50 new beds will be added. But we don't have any info about the existing number of beds. Insufficient

Combining the two, we can identify the value of 'k'.

\(\frac{D}{B} = \frac{10}{200} = \frac{2}{100}\)

INSUFFICIENT.

(2) There are currently 19 doctors employed by the hospital.
Nothing about the beds so old ratio is not available.

INSUFFICIENT.

Together 1 and 2
Doctors = 19. So, Beds = 20 * 19
New total of beds = 19*50 + 50

New Ratio = \(\frac{19}{19*20 + 50}\)

SUFFICIENT.

Answer C.

Taken together 1&2,
There are currently 19 doctors and 380 beds.
—> 380 +50 = 430

We know that 50 additional beds would be added to the hospital. We are to determine the new Doctor to beds ratio of the hospital after the addition of the bed.

We need to have a fair idea of the existing number of doctors and the existing number of beds the hospital currently has. Then we can add additional beds and determine the new doctor to beds ratio.

(1) The ratio of doctors to beds is currently 1 to 20.
Insufficient. We have no idea the actual number of doctors and beds in the hospital. There could be 10 doctors and 200 beds, 20 doctors and 400 beds, etc and each of these would lead to different doctor to bed ratios. Now that we have an information about the doctor to bed ratio in the hospital now, we need to know the number of doctors or beds currently in the hospital.

(2) There are currently 19 doctors employed by the hospital.
Insufficient. We have no way of determining the number of beds in the hospital at the moment. We need that information in order to determine the doctor to bed ration.

Sufficient. Doctor to bed ratio = 19/(380+50) = 19/430

C is the answer.

Given, to find out new ratio if 50 new beds added

(1) \(\frac{d}{b}=\frac{1}{20} = \frac{x}{20x}\)
New ratio = \(\frac{x}{20x+50}\)
Need to know the value of x. Insufficient

(2) d=19
Ratio = \(\frac{19}{b+50}\)
Need to know value of b. Insufficient

(1) + (2)
x=19,
Therefore, new ratio = \(\frac{19}{(20.19)+50}\)
Sufficient
