The distance covered by three different modes of transport = 180 km by ferry, 360 km by train, and 30 km by horse carriage.

The entire journey takes 15 hours.

speed of train = 3* speed of horse carriage.

speed of train = (3/2) * Speed of ferry.

Speed of Train : Speed of Ferry : Speed of Horse Carriage = 3:2:1 = 3x : 2x : x

Total time = 15 hours.

(360/3x) + (180/2x) + (30/x ) = 15

(120/x) + (90/x) + (30/x) = 15

240/x = 15

x = 16.

Speed of Train = 3x = 3*16 = 48 kmph.

In this question i said total avg speed =total dist/total time,
(180+360+30)/15=38
and given speed is t+2t/3+t/3=2t(total)
we need to find t we get 2t=38
which is 19 and not even an answer choice , what is wrong in my approach ,is it because as speed is inversly related it cannot be added directly?
please let me know and thank you in advance

GMAT Club Official Solution:

Let the train speed be t km/h.
Then horse carriage speed = t/3, and ferry speed = 2/3 * t.

Total time:
180/((2/3) * t) + 360/t + 30/(t/3) = 15
270/t + 360/t + 90/t = 15
t = 48

Answer: C.

You cannot add speeds because each speed applies for a different amount of time.

Average speed over the whole trip is total distance divided by total time, not the sum of the individual speeds.
