The question should have said that E is the midpoint of BC.
Then the heights for both = DC equal.
Since E=BE =1/2, bases are equal in length (not the same though)
Also it would be good to remember that a median always divides the triangle into 2 parts having the same area. It's easy to remember since area = 1/2*base.height. For the two triangles height will remain the same as the original triangle and the base will be 1/2 of the original triangle.

stoylar...how do we know that both triangles have the same bases/heights....i can see the heights (b/c its just one side of the square), but how do we know that the bases are the same??
