After World War I, German democracy, already handicapped by the apolitical attitude that had often characterized German intellectuals, and by a steady barrage of criticism from its enemies, was compromised for more of its citizens by its origins in defeat, while in other countries, more notably Poland and Hungary, the immediate postwar instability led to the establishment of regimes that were authoritarian in essence.

1. "was compromised" - Democracy (singular) "were" is wrong. B goes off
2. "while in other countries, most notably Poland and Hungary" - we are picking two countried out of "others" (many). So, "most" is better. A and C goes off.
3. "compromised for more of its citizens " - I don't know if citizens are countable or quantity. I guess public is a quantity and citizen is countable. Hence, choosing, E.
D also. It's b/w C and D
I'll go with D because it better points out that those 2 countries are among the most/best known for the establishment of authoritarian regimes
(D). We need a plural 'was', as we're talking about German Decomcracy.
And we need 'most' instead of 'more' as that's what the sentence is about, most citizens had their democracy compromised.
Similarly, we need 'most notably in Poland and Hungary' rather than more.
well, when comparing two things you use more right? It is comparing citizens who believed democracy was comprimised, to citizens who believed it wasn't.

I don't believe this is the tested concept here. The stem is about how democracy was compromised for "most" of Germany's citizens, not "more" of its citizens. I stand by D.
From my point of view, I stick with my original answer (C) even if everybody seems to go for D and that thre final OA seems to be E.
Concerning C, I take more notably Poland and Hungary like "more specifically", "more generally"...in my mind the sentence C is correct.
Anyway, I can accept OA would be D but E is too strange...would be good to have some advice from some manhattan-kaplan-princeton consultant for this one
I think the answer E is correct. If you remove the eliptical element, then the sentence will read as follows:
After World War I, German democracy, ... was compromised for more of its citizens by its origins in defeat, while in other countries, most notably Poland and Hungary, the immediate postwar instability led to the establishment of regimes that were authoritarian in essence
That means that the german democracy was already compromised for some of the citizens. However, it was compromised for more citizens after world war 1.
