the ant walks an average of 500 meters in 12 minutes
or,
500 meters in 1/5 hours

the beetle walks 15% less distance = 500-75=425 meters in 12 minutes
or,
0.425 km in 12/60 = 1/5 hours

speed = 0.425*5 = 2.125 km/h

I guess option A should be 2.125

I did a bit of dimensional analysis initially.

(500m/12 min) * (60 min/1hr) * (1km/1000m) = 5km/2hr = 2.5km/hr.

Remember that the answers are increasing in rates. Given that the beetle must be walking slower than 2.5km/hr and there is only one answer with a lower rate than 2.5km/hr, (Answer choice A) that one must be the answer.

If you had to solve for it, since we know the beetle's speed is 15% less (10% + 5%), just determine 15% and subtract from 2.5km/hr. 10% of 2.5 = 0.25,and half of that is 0.125.

Then we're looking at [2.5 - (0.25 + .125)] or (2.5 - 0.375) = 2.125 which should be the answer, but maybe it's a typo?

A. 2.215.
B. 2.5.
C. 2.775.
D. 3.2.
E. 3.5.

Bunuel , I, too, calculate the answer as 2.125 km/hr. I think there might be a typo in answer A.

Ant: $$\frac{500m}{12min}$$

Beetle walks 15 percent less distance in same time. (500 * .85 ) = 425 m

Beetle: $$\frac{425m}{12min} *\frac{60min}{1hr}* \frac{1km}{1000m}$$ =

$$\frac{425}{200}$$ = 2.125 km/hr

Typo edited. Thank you all.

The rate of the beetle in meters per minute is (0.85 x 500)/12 = 425/12.

Since 1 hour = 60 minutes and 1 km = 1000 meters, the rate in km per hour is:

425/12 x 60 / 1000 = 425 x 5 / 1000 = 2.125
