This is a geometric progression question.

The next term is twice the previous term.

Question says ar^4=48, where r is the difference of the 2 successive terms and a is the first term.

so r=2, meaning a(2)^4=48

=> a=3

Ans: A

At each basketball practice last week, Jenny made twice as many free throws as she made at the previous practice. At her fifth practice she made 48 free throws. How many free throws did she make at the first practice?

(A) 3
(B) 6
(C) 9
(D) 12
(E) 15

1st game = x
2nd game 2x
3rd = 4x
4th 8x
5th 16x
16x = 48
x= 3
so 1st game = 3

We can let n = the number of free throws made at the first practice:

n = first practice

2n = second practice

2 x 2n = 4n = third practice

2 x 2 x 2n = 8n = fourth practice

2 x 2 x 2 x 2n = 16n = fifth practice

We are told that at the fifth practice she made 48 free throws. Thus, we have:

16n = 48

n = 3

Answer: A
