At the end of the first week, the heights of 5 trees R, S, T, U, V are 12, 13, 14, 14, and 17. At the end of the second week, V is 3 taller and the range of 5 tree's heights is 5. What is the possible height of the shortest tree?
a) 14 b) 16 c) 21

New height of tree V = 17+3 =20
Assume increase in height of smallest tree 12 to be x in second week
Range = 5 = 20 - (12+x)
or 12+x = 15
x = 3
Therefore new height of smallest tree is 12 +3 = 15
The assumption could be that RSTUV do not correspond to 12, 13,14,14,17
you probably can say V=13, so V+3 =16
the other trees algrew by the second week, so you could get 16 18 19 20 21 and range here is 5-- so the possible answer is 16. I have no idea if this is the answer, quite an out-of the box question.
