Took the GMAT today. Scored 720 Quant: 47 (83%) Verbal 42 (96%).
I knew I wasn't ready for the test. If it weren't so expensive to cancel the test, I would have cancelled, but I decided to take it for a practice run -- too see how much I need to study before I retake the test. I knew the quant would kill me. I've taken 4 Kaplan practice tests with the following scores.
Kap 1 - 580
Kap 2 - Did not finish the 2nd one (got too frustrated with quant)
Kap 3 - 560
Kap 4 - 550
Each time, I never even got close to finishing the quant sections in Kaplan. I'd just randomly guess on the last 8 - 9 problems each time. I haven't had a math class since high school. I would only get about 1/2 of the questions correct on the kaplan tests. I thought the quant on the actual GMAT was WAY easier than Kaplan math. I actually got through the section. Even though I guessed on 8 or 9, I at least got a good look at each problem.
I'm a native English speaker, so the verbal was easy. I didn't even really study for verbal. I just did about 40 - 50 ?'s from
the official guide for each type of verbal question, and that's about it. I knew math would be the struggle. I got almost all of the way though the quant ?'s in
the official guide, but I ran out of time. (Like I said, I knew I wasn't prepared going into the test!)
Unlike most of you, I'm taking the test so that I can get a PhD in finance. So, I need to get my quant up into the top 5%. (I think I need a 50 on math!) I'm going to take a couple of math classes this winter and next spring, and then I'll try retaking the GMAT about 1 year from year before I apply to PhD programs. In high school I was actually good at math, but now I'm not.
Can you give me some tips on how to improve my quant before I retake the test?!?!?!?
