for question 1, where is the reference to deliberate derision?

There is nowhere that the author mentions the effect of deliberate derision on the poets. The passage extends the statement, that casual reviews would always be more popular >> Lively examples... are of this class > Thus it happens that we remember the witty onslaughts ( witty redicule > casual mockery/witticism/ridicule over deliberate derision)

Then responses of diff poets to such witticisms ( witty remarks) is stated. This can only lead to D.
