If a car goes 7 miles in 1 hour and 10 minutes, what is its speedin mph?

R T = D

R = D / T

R = 7 / [7/6]

R = 42 / 7 = 6mph

my question is why do we not convert the 1 hour 10 minutes to 70 minutes? what is the logic behind it?

You'll probably get a lot more replies on this if you posted it in the Math forum

Since the answer is required in units of mph, its better to use numbers in those units in calculation. Hence its better to convert the time into 7/6. If you use time as 70 mins you'll get answer in miles per minute and then would have to convert it back to mph.
