What happens in the scenario that for independent application to HKS and HBS, with intent of enrolling for the joint degree-
Case 1) the candidate is rejected by HBS, accepted by HKS
Case 2) the candidate is rejected by HKS and accepted by HBS.

Great question!

HBS and HKS make the admissions decisions totally separate and do not communicate to one another about joint degree applicants until after the admissions decisions are made and they have to reconcile who will be given the option to defer their HBS year while they attend HKS with the joint program, as well as who gets the chance to extend their response deadline to the admissions offer as they await a decision from the other school (in the case that you apply to HBS in Round 1).

If you get into HKS and not HBS, you will be able to take the 2-year MPP degree program just as any other HKS student. If you get into HKS and a non-HBS MBA program, you can pursue a 3-year concurrent degree between those two schools (in which case you can also switch from the MPP program to the MPA program without having to meet the MPA prerequisites).

If you get into HBS and not HKS, you can come to HBS for the 2-year MBA. HBS offers no other concurrent degree programs in public policy or government besides the HKS MPP and MPA-ID.

Hope this helps! Reach out with any other questions here: https://www.ivyadmissionsgroup.com/contact/and

Did any MPP/MBA hopefuls get an invite today for R1 interviews?

Thanks Nate!

So if we get accepted into non-HBS MBA program and HKS MPA/ID, do we have option to pursue 3 year concurrent degree between the universities if WE HAVE NOT MENTIONED the intent to pursue HKS MPA/ID during application to the MBA program?

Also, HKS asks for other universities you have applied to. Do you recommend coming clean and telling everywhere you have applied or would the admission team form a (negative) impression based on no. of schools you are applying to?

Thanks

Shivani

Hi,

I apply to HBS and HKS separately without indicating my interest in the concurrent degree, since I think I will just either go to HBS or HKS. Now, I kinda change my mind and want to do the concurrent degree. May I tell the school that I am actually considering the concurrent degree? Now, I am on the Waitlist of HBS, and just submit my HKS application. Thank you so much.

Have you checked with HKS committee whether the application would be considered. The deadline for HKS was 4th Dec.

Hi there! HBS and HKS make their admissions decisions totally separately so any change of heart won't affect your odds of getting in. I don't think that telling HBS of your decision would move the needle, but you should still share it with them! Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out with any questions here.

I already applied to HKS by the deadline, but I didn't check with HKS committee about the double degree.

Hi Thank you so much for your response. I was worried that HBS or HKS would question my decision-making capability. Like, why did you make this decision when you apply? Thank you so much.
