Hi mun23,
If you are often stuck in assumption questions then you may also face problems in strengthening/ weakening questions. You should master the assumption questions before entering the test room as majority of CR questions are assumption based. Assumption is an unstated premise that must be true in order for our conclusion to be true.
A simple argument: Mark has secured 70% marks in maths, so she must be intelligent.
One assumption could be that "Mark did not use any unfair means such as cheating during the exams" --> This has to be true for the conclusion to be true. If we negate this assumption the conclusion will fall apart i.e. If Mark cheated to get 70% marks then he may not necessarily be intelligent.
another possible assumption could be " The teachers checking the answer books had no bias for Mark".
Most often an incorrect answer choice mentions a premise. An assumption is not stated in the
The above question compares best selling ice cream with best selling candy. A possible assumption that comes to mind is that people have same preferences of flavor in ice creams as they have in candies
(A)Because someone prefers vanilla ice cream does not mean he prefers vanilla-flavored candy.
This choice is weakening our conclusion. In fact the opposite of this answer choice could be a possible assumption for the argument.
(B)Children who prefer vanilla ice cream also tend to like chocolate candy.
The stimulus is concerned about the sale of ice creams and candies, liking one over another is irrelevant; moreover, argument makes a general statement but (B) takes into account only the children.
(C)Those who prefer neither vanilla nor chocolate ice cream also prefer other flavors of candy.
We are only concerned about the two flavors, other flavors are out of the scope of the stimulus.
(D)Someone who prefers vanilla ice cream may still order chocolate on occasion.
Stimulus does not discuss occasional preferences, but makes a general conclusion. thus incorrect
(E)Preferences for certain ice cream flavors are similar to preferences for candy flavor
This is the correct answer, it addresses the missing link in the argument. This makes our comparison a legitimate one, and has to be true for the conclusion to be true. If preferences are similar the the vanilla flavored candy can probably sell better than the chocolate candy
