The new heart scans offer patients significant benefits. They can be completed in a fraction
of the time required for an angiogram, with no recovery time necessary. Furthermore, the
scans are more sensitive and can identify problem areas that an angiogram might not
perceive. However, heart scans use more radiation than most diagnostic procedures, and can
cause undue concern over and treatment for the harmless abnormalities often picked up by
such sensitive technology. Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the
statements above?
A) A heart scan is safer than an angiogram procedure.
b) Patients should not be concerned about heart abnormalities that appear in a heart scan.
c) A heart scan could result in indirect harm by causing a patient to undergo risky, unnecessary
procedures.
d) An angiogram is the more appropriate of the two procedures for most patients.
e) The heart scan is a more expensive procedure than the angiogram.

Main CR Qs link - Main link - cr-qs-600-700-level-131508.html

OA is C, but answer choice D seems more approriate to me.
I dont get why the procedures are unnecessary, when the new scans can identify problems in areas where a normal scan cannot.

Am I wrong? Or is this just another bad formulated CR question?

The OA is correct. D is not appropriate because no where in the question stem does it state that angiogram is more appropriate than heart scans. The question steam just lists 2 advantages and 1 disadvantage of the heart scans but does not state if it is less or more appropriate than an angiogram.

We cannot assume that because heart scans can identify harmless abnormalities, it becomes a less appropriate method than an angiogram. Perhaps angiogram has a more significant disadvantage than heart scan but it is not listed in the question steam.

C is correct because it is basically just repeating what is written in the question stem. It can cause indirect harm, because the patient might undergo unnecessary procedures because of what the heart scan shows.

The key is to stick to the information and not assume anything more than what is written in the question stem. :-D

Hope this helps.

It means scan detects abnormalities , which are harmless and can be left untreated but since they are detected patient undergo treatment.

I don't think C is right since the question stem never mentioned the treatment is risky and harmful. The treatment may be unnecessary, but it is way too far to assume the treatment is risky or harmful. what if the treatment is only to take some medicines, a procedure that is not risky at all? In hance, I don't think C is right. C requires the same amount assumption as D does.

The passage states that the scans could result in undue concern and treatment. Correct answer C, others can be eliminated

The passage that heart scans take less time than angiograms and do not require recovery time. They are also more sensitive than angiograms. But they use more radiation than other diagnostic procedures. And finally, their sensitivity can result in detection of harmless abnormalities that may worry patients. We are asked to find among the choices a conclusion that can be drawn on the basis of that information.

Choice C states that a heart scan could result in indirect harm by causing a patient to undergo risky unnecessary procedures. This is supported by the passage, which states that the scans could result in undue concern and treatment.
