Darion has at least one quarter, one dime, one nickel, and one penny in his pocket. He has three times as many pennies as nickels, three times as many nickels as dimes, and three times as many dimes as quarters. If he has 120 coins, how much money does he have?

A. $1.20

B. $3.81

C. $4.06

D. $4.07

E. $7.75

Solution:

We can let the number of quarters = x. Thus, the number of dimes = 3x, the number of nickels = 3(3x) = 9x, and the number of pennies = 3(9x) = 27x. We can create the equation:

x + 3x + 9x + 27x = 120

40x = 120

x = 3

Therefore, Darion has 3 quarters, 9 dimes, 27 nickels, and 81 pennies, for a total of:

3(0.25) + 9(0.10) + 27(0.05) + 81(0.01) = 0.75 + 0.90 + 1.35 + 0.81 = $3.81

Can we get a question in the exam where the dollar or cent values of these terms are not given? I knew what a quarter and a penny meant but not what a dime or nickel is.
