I've spent 7 years in investment management, and the last 4 have been directly in sustainable & impact investing (predominantly in public equity portfolio management) -- and I'd like to focus on earlier stage investing.

Post-MBA, I'd like to get into agriculture venture capital investing; long-term, I'd love to found and build my own companies from scratch.

Hi @sjdubois985
Thanks for sharing your profile.

Your GPA (3.8) is superb but do clarify your undergrad specialization.

Having 8 years of experience, with 4 in a specialized and forward-leaning segment like sustainable/impact investing, is definitely mature and attractive to GSB and Harvard. Assuming you’ve managed significant capital, or even led investments, these specifics and metrics will need to come through clearly in your resume and essays. Also prepare yourself to answer questions such as ‘Why MBA now?’ ‘Why do you need the MBA to break into early-stage VC?’ ‘What kind of companies you wish to establish?’ etc.

Your post-MBA goal, involving a transition from public equity sustainable investing to agriculture-focused VC, is interesting. With that aside, your rationale needs to show strategic intent and market understanding. So basically, you need to show that:
- You understand what VC firms (especially in agri/food) are looking for
- You’ve had exposure to early-stage companies (either directly or via deals or second-hand networks)

GSB is likely to ask for some ‘proof of direction.’ Have you done angel investing? Built relationships with agri/future-food startups? These distinguish a visionary goal from a well-grounded, fundable one.

Since you haven’t provided a GMAT/GRE score, we’ve assumed you are yet to take the exam. If this is the case, then you should aim for a 327+ score in GRE or a 695+ score in GMAT.

We understand that creating a standout application that coveys your background and goals in the most astute manner is quite a nerve-wrecking task and that’s why we at The MBA Edge are here. We’d love to offer a free 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your portfolio, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Thank you for sharing your profile @sjdubois985! Your 3.8 GPA and 8 years of professional experience, including 4 years dedicated to sustainable and impact investing, form a good foundation. Top MBA programs are increasingly valuing candidates with demonstrable impact in sectors aligned with ESG, sustainability, and social change. Your work in public equity portfolio management with a sustainability lens sets you apart as someone who not only understands financial markets but also cares about broader outcomes.

Moreover, your post-MBA goal, transitioning into agriculture-focused VC investing, is both specific and well-aligned with current global trends, such as climate-tech, agri-tech innovation, and food security. These themes resonate particularly well with Stanford GSB. Make sure your essays clearly articulate why now, why MBA, and why early-stage agri investing is your next move; this can be a powerful and authentic story.

You haven’t mentioned a GMAT or GRE score. For Stanford and HBS, a competitive score (GMAT 695+ or GRE equivalent) will be helpful to reinforce your academic readiness. Do you have any direct exposure to venture capital (deal sourcing, startup due diligence, or board work)? If not, think about how you can either gain some experience or draw transferable parallels from your work in public equity investing to VC decision-making and early-stage founder engagement. Highlight stories where you drove results beyond your job description, especially moments where you’ve shown vision, initiative, and impact. If you've explored any entrepreneurial ventures, side projects, or idea-stage startups in the agriculture/impact space, even informally, mention them. If not, now might be a good time to begin working on one, even at a research level.

Key Questions to Reflect On:
What specifically draws you to agriculture investing, personal passion, macro trends, or a gap in the market? Have you had any meaningful interactions with entrepreneurs or investors in the agri-tech ecosystem? How have you influenced investment philosophy or portfolio direction in your current or past roles? Answering these questions clearly will help the AdCom understand your passion and future trajectory.

If you'd like, feel free to book a profile evaluation session. Good luck!

Cheers!

Hi @sjdubois985,

You bring a focused and mature profile with 8 years in investment management and a clear specialization in sustainable and impact investing. Your 3.8 GPA signals strong academic performance, and your pivot toward agri-focused venture capital is both differentiated and mission-driven, something top programs appreciate, especially those with strong social impact and VC ecosystems. The depth of experience in public markets, paired with your long-term entrepreneurial vision, creates a compelling arc for post-MBA goals.

To strengthen your application, emphasize any early-stage investing exposure (if any), or build it through side projects, networking, or angel syndicates over the next year. With strong essays that connect your past, passion for sustainability, and VC aspirations, you’re a competitive candidate at top global MBA programs.

GMAT - you should aim for a 695+ score to strengthen your application and stay competitive for top-tier programs.

Feel free to book a free call with our MBA experts for a more detailed discussion. You can also contact us directly at [email protected] or +91-7780769732.

Hi there, thanks for the detailed profile.

You're in a strong position with 7 years in investing and a clear shift from public markets to early-stage agri VC. Stanford will love the founder mindset and sustainability mission, Harvard the depth of impact focus. T

he challenge will be positioning this pivot as both credible and necessary — how does your public market lens translate to seed/Series A strategy?

Your GPA is solid, and if your GRE lands in the 325+ zone, you're very much in the running.

Essays need to reflect deep self-awareness and personal clarity on your long-term “builder” arc.

Let’s connect 1-on-1 to shape this into a bold, investor-to-founder narrative.

Interesting work, Yogin. Make sure you don't focus on just the technical aspects, but show your business understanding behind your work and its importance to the world. Your projects are very long gestation, so this could be a bit of a challenge, but 4.8 years is also sufficient time to understand the way your org/ the industry functions. The career goal sounds aligned with your experience, that said, build a coherent narrative that explains why consulting is the best vehicle to achieve whatever utopian world you desire through your career.
Feel free to reach out for a discussion, I'd be happy to know more about your profile and offer some tips.

26 year old white male in doing research at a pre-clinical biotech, and I want to switch into the business aspect of the life sciences indsutry. Post-MBA I hope to pivot into IB to learn how pre-revenue life science companies are financed, then thinking long term doing corp dev at a biotech.

3.4 GPA from a top 30 college in the US. Less than ideal GPA, not sure if I should talk about it in optional essays; I'm hoping my GRE will offset this.

329 GRE (165Q/164V)

Two promotions at current company, I think I will have strong recommendations from here.

@TV1209 - the GPA (which undergrad uni was it from?) and GMAT score are good for ISB.

Work-ex sounds interesting as well, though I'd like to know more details to assess better i.e. which companies, roles, key achievements, progressions/ promotions, etc.

With a strong application, your profile will be positioned well. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Hi @TV1209,

So, you've got a good enough GMAT score for ISB and the GPA is also in place but do clarify the specialization of your undergrad. The kind of work profile and number of years too is good but it would great if you could provide more specificity into the scope of your work and other factors. Also, what your post-MBA plan? Which industry or sector do you want to work in?

We'd be more than happy to connect with you 1-on-1 and evaluate your profile for free to see how you stand for ISB and how to improve your chances. And with R1 deadlines at Sep 14, it's best to sort this out at the earliest. So, feel free to reach out to us at the coordinates below!

Trying to make a career transition from running my own (solo founder) e-commerce business to corporate finance or investment banking. An MBA will give me the technical foundation and the recruiting path to make these transition possible as I am now 8 years out from my undergrad studies.

Right after post MBA would like to be an investment banking associate at a firm such as Goldman
Long term goal post MBA (5 years out) - would love to switch into private equity
Why I want one now: My business has reached an inflection point and I am ready to make a career change. It’s no longer in a growth stage, and I’m ready for a new challenge. I wish to build a long-term career in finance and utilize my finance degree. (ideally make the transition into IB post-MBA)
Activities: Finance Chair of local building association; co-chair of local Asian Community of Chicagoland and finally captain of local pickleball league

Hi there, thanks for the detailed profile.

Your 335 GRE + 3.8 GPA combo checks the academic box for M7, but the jump from solo e-comm founder to IB is a tough sell unless you nail your why-now narrative.

Adcoms want to see finance-readiness: your ECs help, but you’ll need to show quant prep (think modeling, valuation courses, or internships if possible).

8 years post-UG is on the high side, so the “career switcher” story needs urgency and credibility.

PE long-term is fine, but don’t push it hard in apps. Wharton and Booth are your best shots given finance tilt.

Let’s position your pivot with clarity and back it up with finance fluency.

Thank you for sharing your thoughtful and ambitious profile. Your background as a solo founder in the e-commerce space, combined with a great academic track record (GPA 3.8 and GRE 335), sets a good foundation for a pivot into investment banking through an MBA. The entrepreneurial experience you bring is a huge asset; top business schools appreciate candidates who have built something from the ground up, managed P&L responsibilities, and demonstrated grit and leadership, all of which you likely have in spades. Your career pivot to investment banking is feasible, but you’ll need to clearly demonstrate your post-MBA rationale and how your past experience prepares you for that high-stakes, fast-paced world.

Your school list, Wharton, Booth, Kellogg, and Columbia, is good. All 4 schools offer recruiting pipelines into top investment banks. Wharton and Booth are especially known for their finance rigor and connections to firms like Goldman Sachs. Columbia’s location offers you geographic proximity to Wall Street, which can help with networking. Kellogg, better known for marketing and general management, may offer a slightly more personal community feel if you value that.

However, your path isn’t without challenges. Investment banking is a tough post-MBA pivot, especially for candidates without prior finance or traditional corporate experience. That said, you can overcome this by focusing your application on your quant acumen (ideally supported by any pre-MBA coursework in finance or accounting), deal exposure, or analytical work you’ve done in your e-commerce business, and a clear explanation of why banking is your next step. If you haven’t yet, consider a short pre-MBA program, or an online course in financial modeling through Online platforms or Coursera to strengthen your technical narrative. Additionally, if your undergrad degree was in a relevant discipline like economics, finance, or engineering, highlight that as part of your case for preparedness. You can also explore schools like NYU Stern, Darden, or even Yale SOM. You can take a look at this success story.

A few reflective questions to help refine your applications: Have you conducted informational interviews with alumni currently in investment banking to speak confidently about your goals and the transition plan? Can you quantify and articulate the financial/strategic success of your e-commerce venture in a way that resonates with finance professionals? Are you open to working in middle-market IB or regional offices to build your path toward PE, which is an ultra-competitive post-MBA?

Your extracurriculars, finance chair for a local building association, leadership within the Asian community, and captain of a pickleball league, help humanize your application and show community involvement. Be sure to frame these in a leadership or initiative-driven light when crafting your essays and resume.

Now it would be about precision storytelling. If you're interested. Happy to connect. Feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hi @entrepreneurtomba,

You have a compelling career transition story backed by a strong academic profile (3.8 GPA, 335 GRE) and entrepreneurial credibility. Running an e-commerce business solo for 8 years shows grit, leadership, and financial stewardship, which are core qualities that can translate well into investment banking.

Your post-MBA goal of IB would be challenging without any prior finance related experience. See how you can position your current work ex and iyou can connect your operational and P&L ownership experience to deal work and value creation. Also, showcasing competency in areas like financial modelling can strengthen your case. Along with Wharton, Booth, Columbia, Kellogg you should consider including Stern in your school list as well.

Extracurricular leadership - Finance Chair, co-chairing a community group, and even leading a pickleball league adds great texture and shows community involvement, which strengthens your overall profile.

It will be crucial to build an authentic, compelling narrative. Focus on articulating your goals and career transition plan clearly - make sure your goals are specific and well-defined. Connect your past experiences to your future goals, highlight the specific skills or exposure you're seeking and explain how the MBA will help you gain these to achieve your goals.

@entrepreneurtomba - Your GRE score and GPA establish a strong academic foundation.

Your 7 years of experience as a solo founder demonstrates entrepreneurial drive and resilience. However, to assess your profile better, I'd like to know more details about your business e.g. metrics, growth, roles you assumed , leadership impact, etc.

The pivot from running your own venture to a highly structured IB role is ambitious, requiring a very compelling narrative on how your skills transfer and how the MBA (now) will bridge gaps for this transition. To that end, the short-term and long-term career goals would need brainstorming/ research.

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Hi
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, you have a compelling GRE score, congratulations! Your 6 years of experience as an engineering consultant across India and the U.S. gives you both domain expertise and international exposure which are critical for MBB recruiting post-MBA. You’ll want to clearly articulate where your consulting experience transitions into strategic thinking and client impact, as opposed to pure technical execution.

ECs like tutoring underprivileged children, leadership in student groups, and organizing events show consistent engagement and add a human side to your analytical profile. You are also a strong fit for your target schools.

Have you led any client-facing initiatives or teams that you can frame as people leadership rather than purely technical contributions?

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for top MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!

Well done for the scores, JP. They give you a strong defense not to get rejected. However, to get selected, your narratives will be crucial. Indian male engineers apply in plenty, and many have similar scores as you. Those who make it have the clarity of thought reflected in their applications—through the CV, essays, and even LoRs (do not underestimate this piece). Why an MBA, why now, and why MBB—each piece is a link of your chain. You need to ensure that there are no weak links. Happy to speak if you wish to. Best wishes.

Hi @JP_37
Thanks for sharing your profile.

There’s a lot to like here. A 337 GRE is excellent, comfortably above average for even the most competitive programs. Your undergrad GPA (3.75) is strong, and your engineering background is typical but solid. The MS from an M7 school adds more weight to your profile. A 3.22 GPA there is below average, but since you’ve explained it in the optional essay and followed it up with a 3.9 GPA in your ongoing CS master’s from a top program, you’ll be seen on the right track academically. But you will need to think about one thing which is explaining why you’re pursuing a degree in CS when you already hold a masters in engineering. This needs to be thought-out well considering your future plan is to venture into VC.

In terms of work profile, you have 6 years of experience split between India and the US, which immediately gives you an edge in terms of international exposure. Working as an engineering consultant positions you well for MBB, but only if you’re able to translate that into business-facing impact in your application, which means that you don’t limit yourself to just a technical narrative. Make sure your resume and essays are heavy on client leadership, strategic thinking, cross-functional collaboration, and measurable outcomes. Focus on the scope, scale, and complexity of your engagements.

The first jump to consulting is a well-trodden path so that's alright. The long-term pivot to VC is niche, and in this case, it’s okay if it’s a strong personal motivation that ties with some experience in construction tech as you’ve specified this domain. However, note that VC is not a post-MBA placement channel in the traditional sense unless you're networking your way in or already have startup/angel investing experience. So, keeping it as a long-term plan is the right way of thinking. But the goal evolution still needs to be explained especially in the perspective of how the MBA will help in this purpose and why specifically VC in construction tech.

Good work on the extracurriculars just ensure that you strategically draft it in your essays.

Targeting US-based schools is a good choice since you have region-specific experience. Given your plan to work at MBB post-MBA and then move into a niche VC segment, Chicago (Booth/Kellogg) and New York (Columbia/Stern) are logical launchpads. MBB recruits across all your target schools, but do be cautious that your goals are well-defined and explained. Ross too is good for consulting and works with your profile.

We understand that creating a standout application that accounts for all your weak-spots and wins is quite a nerve-wrecking task and that’s why we at The MBA Edge are here. We’d love to offer a free 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your portfolio, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

You've got an excellent GRE score and it seems like you are quite the academic learner- with two Masters degrees in you pocket and a third one that you are eyeing. All good until here. You will need to explain why you need the MBA given your work experience accumulated over six years and what you expect to achieve from your career in the future. I guess your pursuit of an MBA will come on the heels of your online MS degree completion. An MBA should make sense given this scenario- so be sure that you are able to give convincing arguments in your application.
Talking further about career goals, while I understand the short term goal of consulting, I am a little perplexed about the VC aspiration, especially as you add construction tech. Do note that your short term career goal should lead you up to the long term goal by helping you build relevant experience. And looking at your academic degrees and the short term goal, I am not able to immediately understand this connection.
If case method excites you, look into Darden as well. Tuck and Yale are other programs very strong for consulting.

Hi there, thanks for the detailed profile.

Strong GRE (337), dual grad degrees, 6 years of cross-border consulting: you’re competitive for M7. Engineering background + current online CS degree add a future-proof layer.

GPA dip in M7 MS is manageable if well explained (which you’ve done). Career goal (MBB → ConTech VC) is ambitious but believable.

Slight caution: your ECs are decent but not standout, so find ways to show leadership beyond academics. Booth and Kellogg are realistic; Columbia may be a bit more resume-driven, so make your essays count.

Let’s refine your VC goal and highlight your tech-business crossover more strategically.

Thank you for sharing your detailed and well-rounded profile, Suyash. With 6 years of experience in engineering consulting across India and the U.S., paired with a good academic background and an outstanding GRE score of 337 (Q169, V167, AWA 5.5), you’re positioning yourself as a highly competitive candidate for top-tier business schools like Booth, Kellogg, and Columbia. Your educational journey, including a B.E. from India, an MS from an M7 institution, and a current online CS degree from a top university, reflects a consistent track record of intellectual rigor and continued learning. Although your MS GPA is slightly lower (3.22), it can be explained in the optional essay, combined with your ongoing CS degree GPA of 3.9, effectively shows academic resilience and upward momentum.

From a career perspective, your consulting experience in engineering provides a good foundation for your post-MBA goals in MBB consulting, with a longer-term aspiration in venture capital focused on construction tech (that niche interest, construction tech VC, would look both differentiated and timely, especially if you can demonstrate some good connection or exposure to the startup or innovation ecosystem in that space). You can take a look at this blog on How to bring collinearity in your post-MBA goals?
Your extracurricular involvement, particularly in social impact (teaching underprivileged students), cultural engagement (Indian student club), and professional leadership (engineering association), rounds out your profile well and helps humanize your application beyond the numbers, but make sure it comes out in a good manner.

Your chances at schools like Booth, Kellogg, and Columbia can be good if you craft a clear and cohesive narrative around your professional growth, your motivation for an MBA now, and how the program will accelerate your path to VC through consulting. You can explore slightly broader options like Ross, Fuqua, or NYU Stern. Be sure to leverage your international background, emphasize cross-functional leadership in your current role, and reach out to current students or alumni to build relevant insights into your essays. If you can deepen your connection to VC (even through mentorship or informal startup engagements), that will further strengthen your long-term goal credibility. You’re on the right path; now it's about telling your story with clarity and conviction.

We would love to learn more about your profile. If you'd like, feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hi @JP_37,

You bring a strong, well-balanced profile with a global academic and professional journey that aligns well with your MBA goals. Your GRE score (337) is excellent, and your GPA trajectory from solid undergrad and current online CS program (3.9) to a slightly lower MS GPA (3.22) is well mitigated with an optional essay. That context, paired with academic rigor and upward trends, should ease adcom concerns.

Your 6 years of engineering consulting experience across India and the U.S. gives you strong cross-border credibility, and your pivot to MBB with a long-term VC focus in construction tech is well-grounded in your background. That “engineering to strategy to investing in your domain” story is both logical and differentiated. Your extracurriculars especially teaching and organizing community events add a layer of impact and leadership outside work.

No major red flags there. Just make sure your essays connect your consulting-to-VC arc clearly and highlight leadership, team impact, and any mentorship roles you’ve had.

@JP_37 - solid profile overall, given the GRE score of 336, M7 (Masters) pedigree, and consulting exposure. The MS GPA would need some explanation.

I'd like to know more about your professional arc to assess better e.g. companies, roles, progression/ promotions, key achievements, etc.

Any extracurriculars you've been involved in post Masters?

It'd also be important to have a strong narrative covering your experiences, career goals, and 'why MBA'. To that end, the career goals would need some brainstorming.

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Thank you for sharing your profile @Vivekthesmarty. With 14 years of experience in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, you're entering the MBA application process with a significant advantage in terms of industry expertise and career maturity. Your long-term vision, transitioning into healthcare strategy or launching a med-tech venture, aligns well with the growing focus many European schools have on digital health, entrepreneurship, and cross-sector innovation. Schools like INSEAD, HEC Paris, IMD, and LBS actively seek candidates who bring depth and leadership in essential global sectors, especially when paired with a forward-looking, impact-driven goal like yours.

That said, your profile also requires strategic positioning due to your seniority. With 14 years of work experience, you are above the average age for most full-time MBA programs, where the typical range is 5-10 years. This isn’t necessarily a disadvantage, but admissions committees will want to understand why a full-time MBA is your preferred path over an Executive MBA. You'll need to clearly articulate what you’re seeking to gain at this stage, whether it’s a significant career pivot, international exposure, access to entrepreneurial resources, or a global peer network to scale your future ventures. The 675 GMAT Focus score is good, particularly for schools like IMD, HEC, and Rotterdam. INSEAD remains a target, especially if you can show international agility and clear post-MBA outcomes, while LBS can be a stretch but achievable with a polished narrative. Hi Vivek,

With 14 years of experience and a background in healthcare strategy, you bring seniority, depth, and a clearly aligned post-MBA goal. Your pivot from healthcare strategy manager to med tech ventures is logical and credible—especially if your current role involves cross-functional leadership, innovation, or exposure to product development.

Your 675 GMAT Focus score is solid, though slightly on the lower end for top programs. That said, your story likely stands out more for its maturity, industry focus, and leadership potential than just stats.

Emphasize career progression and strategic impact across your 14-year span. Explain why would you need a full-time MBA than an executive MBA at this stage of your career. Clarify why MBA now and tie it to scaling med tech ventures, commercialization, or entering entrepreneurial healthcare roles.

Overall, your profile is distinctive and well-aligned with healthcare-focused MBA paths. Strong execution on application materials can offset a slightly modest test score. Feel free to book a free call with our MBA experts for a more detailed discussion. You can also contact us directly at [email protected] or +91-7780769732.

Hi @SIMANTA SOURAV BAL
Thanks for sharing your profile.

Let’s begin with your academics. Having a 7.72 CGPA is acceptable but not really a strong score for ISB who sees a lot of Indian male engineer applicants. So now the only playing card in your hand will be your GMAT which you are yet to take. It’s advisable that you secure a 710+ score to be in the running because the competition at R2 is very intense. Also, any particular reason why you’re not targeting R1?

Next, your work stint at EY is well structured. Three years at a Big 4 in a core tech role, with direct client-facing exposure and progression to leading key components, is strong. The eye-catching thing is that you’ve voluntarily taken ownership by mentoring and stepping up during a team gap. Just make sure your resume captures your quantifiable impact and use the ISB essays as a means to show your business alignment. The reason being that your post-MBA goal is product management, so showing how your current work already touches on user experience, business goals, and architecture choices will support the ‘engineering to product’ narrative well. Also, the awards and certifications you have will definitely make your case.

Speaking of your post-MBA goals, consulting is an industry and PM is a function. Since you’ve mentioned your long-term goals being in the Ed-Tech or Health-Tech space, link your short-term goals to these sectors. Also, when you say leading impact-driven ventures, try to explain a problem statement in Ed-Tech or Health-Tech that the venture will solve. This shows that you’re aware of the challenges in these industries. Also, you need to explain why these two sectors in particular given your engineering and tech background. From what we have read from your profile, it seems that your social impact activities and extracurricular endeavours have influenced this choice. If this is the case, then you will have to explain these aspects very well in your essays so that even the AdComs understand your motivation and industry transition.

ISB does make perfect sense for your geography and goal. They have a good PM recruiting network and their consulting hold is also strong. But as we already mentioned earlier, R2 is more competitive so your GMAT and essays both need to be stellar. Also, would suggest that you keep your options open apart from ISB and target schools in other regions as well. You’ve mentioned openness to global roles offerings but not which regions. So, do think about this aspect as well.

While ISB’s deadline for R2 is 7th December 2025, we suggest that you start getting your profile and applications in order at the earliest along with your GMAT score. Being early gives you ample time to review and revise your applications.

Hi @Gwyneth

I initially planned to apply in Round 1, but due to intense work commitments and personal responsibilities, I haven’t been able to focus adequately on GMAT preparation. As of now, I’m trying to regain momentum, but with R1 deadlines September 14, 2025, I feel that may not give me enough time to achieve a competitive score and complete my applications with the level of quality I aim for.

Given my below-average academic history and the fact that I’ll be applying with just 3 years of work experience (while ISB’s average is over 4 years), I understand I need to build a strong case. I’m targeting a GMAT FE score of 695+ (97+ percentile) to strengthen my profile. I assume the 710 benchmark you mentioned refers to GMAT Classic.

I’m giving myself room for two GMAT attempts in case I fall short on the first try.

Regarding my options, I’m currently only focused on ISB. However, I realize that targeting just one B-school is risky, and I should probably explore more options beyond India. I’m not very keen on pursuing an MBA in the US, but I am open to suggestions and plan to do more research.

Based on my profile and current strategy, what are the top 3 areas I should prioritize now to maximize my chances of getting into a top program like ISB (or similar)?

Thanks and warm regards,
Simanta

Hi @Simanta,

Totally understand your concerns around R1, and yes, if you feel R2 gives you the space to submit your strongest application, then that’s absolutely the right call. Aiming for 695+ is fine, but do try to be in that range or above, since the competition is intense at R2 for ISB.

Now, in terms of the other areas, they’re quite interconnected: your goals need to be sharply defined, your school list should align with your post-MBA direction and background, and your work experience must be positioned to show clear fit and impact. Each of these plays a valuable role in strengthening your candidacy alongside the GMAT.

The best way to figure out what to prioritize across these would really be through a deeper, more interactive conversation.

More than happy to explore these with you 1-on-1, no pressure at all. If it helps to chat over WhatsApp or a quick call, feel free to reach out on +91 88502 49409.

Hi @Simanta,

You have a well-rounded and differentiated profile with strong technical depth, leadership at EY, and a clear trajectory toward product management. Your role in building scalable frameworks, earning multiple internal awards, and working closely with senior leadership shows real impact. Additionally, your self-driven learning, cloud certification, and mentoring highlight initiative and versatility, which are valuable traits for a future PM.

Your 7.72 GPA is on the lower side, so a strong GMAT Focus score (685+) will be crucial to solidify your academic case. However, your profile is rich with leadership, initiative, and personal transformation, from fitness coaching and social volunteering to animal training and esports organizing. These experiences create a powerful well-rounded narrative of discipline, empathy, and multidimensionality.

Your career goals of moving from tech into product management and eventually building EdTech/HealthTech ventures are well aligned with your background and MBA as a next step. Focus on articulating your goals and career transition plan clearly - make sure your goals are specific and well-defined. Connect your past experiences to your future goals, highlight the specific skills or exposure you're seeking and explain how the MBA will help you gain these to achieve your goals

I’m a Consultant in PwC US’s Advisory practice, where I’ve spent the last three years partnering with over ten Fortune 100 clients to tackle their most critical challenges. My core expertise is leading ERP implementations for U.S. organizations—currently, I’m heading security for one of the world’s largest hotel chains.

I hold a B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering (84% aggregate), achieved 81% on my 10th boards, and 62% in 12th. Although my academic background is in CSE, I transitioned directly into consulting upon graduation.

Outside of work, I’m a certified swimmer, train in gymnastics, and have volunteered with several NGOs.

Given my profile, could you please advise what GMAT Focus score I should target to be a competitive candidate?

Aim for 695+ to be seen as competitive. Your GPA of 3 is weak. The rest will depend on your narratives—why do you need an MBA when you want to go back into consulting? Role elevation should not be the only reason.

HI Maitrish, nice profile overall and I hope things work out well for you. Your work experience looks quite solid, and I definitely like the international component - something that can differentiate your experience in a pool of applicants who largely have India work experience. You can tie this with our ability to thrive in and contribute to diverse teams, adaptability and evolved interpersonal skills- all of these traits are important for consultants.
Work hard on the GMAT and a FE score close to 730 will be great. ISB does not require you to convert your GPA to a 4 point scale (neither does any other international b-school ask for this), so quote your GPA in %age only.

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks strong on the surface. Leading ERP implementations for Fortune 100 clients and currently heading security for a global hotel chain adds real weight to your professional story. Academically, your GPA is slightly on the lower side, where competition is intense. To offset your low GPA and demonstrate strong academic potential, you will have to aim for a strong GMAT score. Aim for a score close to 665 or above.

Your ECs add nice texture to your profile and show well-roundedness. One area that may need more clarity is your post-MBA goal. Since you are planning to stay in consulting, it’ll be important to articulate why an MBA now, how ISB fits in, and how you plan to differentiate yourself from others with a similar background. Can you talk about any leadership or people management experience on client projects?

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for top MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!

Hi @Maitrish
Thanks for sharing your profile.

First things first, your BTech percentage is fine, not much to worry about here. As for your GMAT FE score, if you want to be confidently in the game for R1, the bar is 690+ to make a solid case for yourself.

Now on work experience, you’re obviously working with a renowned international brand, and also the nature of your work, which is ERP implementation for Fortune 100 clients, definitely accentuates your profile. Leading security for a global hotel chain is great, but what matters the most for your application is how you show the impact your work has had on the business. This needs to be both in qualitative and quantitative terms so that AdComs can understand the value you bring to the organization other than metric values. Also can you clarify which designation are you in currently, so basically if you’ve had any promotions in your 3 years at PwC? If you've moved up and started leading delivery, you need to make that crystal clear in your resume and essays.

Moving on, staying in the consulting industry post-MBA aligns with your background, but you haven’t really given any insights on whether you’re looking to shift from implementation-heavy consulting to pure strategy or industry-focused roles. ISB AdComs or even international B-School AdComs for that matter will expect some level of clarity, especially from someone like yourself who has been working in the consulting space for 3 years. So do spend some time thinking about your goals, both short-term and long-term, what kind of consulting firms you want to work for, how do these goals build on your existing background, how ISB’s resources will enable you to achieve these goals, etc.

About your extracurriculars, there’s no question that you’ve been actively involved. But only listing the ECs is not enough. You also need to explain if you’ve done something with them. For example, your NGO work, ‘volunteered’ doesn’t say much. What did you actually do? Were you running operations? Fundraising? Teaching? If you were involved in high-impact work, it’s time to dig that up and present it with clarity and substance.

So, you’ve got the right package: global client exposure, high-end consulting experience, international-facing projects, etc. Now what matters is how you present these in your essays in a smooth narrative. Many candidates struggle with doing this and it’s understandable when there’s so much to convey to the AdComs. That’s why we at The MBA Edge are here. We’d love to offer a free 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your portfolio, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Hi @Maitrish,

You have a solid professional foundation with 3 years at PwC Advisory, working on ERP implementations and managing critical client engagements, including leadership on a major global account. That brand-name experience and technical-to-consulting transition give your profile strong credibility for a post-MBA consulting path.

Academically, your undergrad CGA is slightly on the lower side, so a strong GMAT Focus score will be key to demonstrate academic readiness for top MBA programs. You should aim for a score of 675+ to stay competitive.

Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements/tangible impact, relevant skills, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools.

I have been working in a government space agency since September 2023 after graduating with a CGPA of 8.67 in Electronics and Communication Engineering from a well-known publicly funded college in my country. I'm the member secretary of a intra-center project committee and I've been working on some research and development projects as well. On the side, I currently lead a chapter of a well-known NGO and 100+ volunteers work under me. I also hold an executive post in a chapter of my university's alumni association. During my under-graduation, I have presented two research papers in international conferences and one of them was published on IEEE Xplore as well. Other than academics, I was the head organizer of the first ever e-sports fest of our university that was held during Covid period and was involved in organizing various events of other fests as well. I was also part of the university cricket and football team. I also played country-level esports for i2K clan for one year during Covid. I graduated school with a 95.8% and was involved in other extra and co-curricular activities such as holding the second highest post in the student council, being on school quiz team and being a National Talent Search and Uttar Pradesh Science Talent Search scholar as well.

I plan to switch to consulting sector after my MBA and specifically Space Consulting if possible as I believe my various administrative experiences throughout my life combined with the experience of working in space sector would enable me to excel in that domain and contribute to the best of my abilities.

Hi there, thanks for the detailed profile.

You’ve got a rare background: ISRO, research exposure, strong ECs, and NGO leadership, that could stand out if pitched right.

But you're applying to quant-heavy UK schools and don’t have a GMAT yet. That’s your first bottleneck.

For LBS, Said, and Judge, you’ll need 675-695+ (GMAT Focus) just to be in the conversation, especially as a male Indian applicant.

Space consulting is a niche goal so, frame it as tech + strategy in aerospace or defense consulting to make it more relatable. Your story is unique, but your score will dictate how seriously you’re considered.

Let’s get your test plan in place and polish the narrative into a clear pivot.

Happy to connect you with an ISRO alum, who's now pursuing his MBA. Be careful not to pigeonhole yourself into a specific post-MBA domain. Your GMAT score should be at least 30-40 points higher than the average of the schools. And do bear in mind that LBS takes ~15% of the class from South Asia. Target R1 if you can.

Hi @amolrexi,

You have a highly distinctive profile with strong public sector and research credentials through ISRO, coupled with robust leadership across NGO work, alumni engagement, and student life. Your mix of technical expertise, administrative experience, and people leadership sets you apart, especially with your interest in space consulting, a niche but growing domain where your background will be a strategic asset. Your GPA is solid at 3.5, coupled with rich extracurriculars.

A strong GMAT score (ideally 675+) will be key to competing at top UK schools like LBS, Oxford Saïd, Cambridge Judge, and even strong global programs with consulting pipelines. Make sure your essays clearly articulate how your unique space-sector experience translates to consulting. Space consulting is a rare, compelling goal and paired with your background, it gives you a clear, memorable application story.

Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements/tangible impact, relevant skills, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. An energy entrepreneur and former system engineer, I founded an EPC(Engineer, procure and Construct) firm that has delivered 100+ renewable energy projects, including a 100 kWh plant integrated with EV infrastructure. Over five years, I’ve led teams, solved post-pandemic logistical challenges, and collaborated with government and private clients. A two-time state and university-level basketball player, I’ve also volunteered with the UN and helped organize large-scale political rallies with the Aam Aadmi Party. Coming from a modest academic background, I value knowledge over grades. I now seek an MBA to scale my impact, enhance my leadership, and build sustainable infrastructure globally.

Hi @DPMAV
Thanks for sharing your profile.
A 2.9 GPA is very low for all your target schools. To really make your case here, you will need a GMAT Focus score in the 700+ range for Haas, Stern, and Darden whereas Foster and IESE can work with a 685+ score.

Your work ex has a lot of strengths. Founding and scaling an EPC firm in the renewable energy sector with 100+ projects is a good background. Adding to this is your involvement in executional scale, cross-sector client engagement (private + government), and strategic problem-solving during COVID-related logistical disruptions. Leadership is clearly present as you’ve led teams and solved challenges so no worries here. But do ensure that you’re able to emphasize your contributions and impact in your essays. What might be missing is formal finance exposure, since your post-MBA goal is investment management, adcoms will look for a clear connecting link between your current experience and future asset management focus. So, you’ll need to clearly articulate the pivot story: Why this shift, and why now? Your narrative should focus less on ‘finance’ in the abstract and more on why asset allocation for global sustainable infrastructure excites you. If possible, consider pursuing some finance-related certifications like the FMVA or those offered from Coursera to show that you have a ground-level understanding of the domain. A direct jump to investment management is challenging so you really need to improve your profile with some upskilling in these areas.

On to the ECs, being a state/university level basketball player, volunteering with the UN and organizing events give a multidimensionality to your story. What would help further is linking these to leadership, initiative, or impact. So, think along these lines as it will be helpful in your essays.

Thank you for sharing your background @DPMAV! With 8 years of work experience, including founding and leading your own EPC firm in the renewable energy space, you bring a distinctive entrepreneurial and impact-driven profile. Delivering 100+ projects, including one integrated with EV infrastructure, signals scale, relevance, and innovation. Your experience solving real-world operational challenges post-COVID and collaborating across stakeholders (government and private) shows maturity and leadership.

Your GPA of 2.9 is a red flag for top programs, but it can be mitigated. You will need a strong GMAT FE score (ideally 675+) to reassure schools of your academic ability. Additionally, it’s important to explain your academic story thoughtfully in the optional essay. You can take a look at this blog on How to Justify a Low GPA in Your MBA Application

Your extracurriculars, basketball at the state/university level, UN volunteering, and political engagement, add leadership, discipline, and social commitment dimensions to your candidacy. These will be very helpful in rounding out your application.

You could also consider: Johnson (Cornell), Rotman, ESMT, Yale

Clarify your Post-MBA goals: “Finance: Investment Management” is broad. Are you targeting infrastructure finance, ESG funds, or clean-tech VC? Being specific will help the AdCom understand your trajectory. From energy operations to financial modeling or project finance, draw the bridge for the reader. You can take a look at this blog on How to bring collinearity in your post-MBA goals?

Questions to Reflect On:
How do you plan to transition from infrastructure entrepreneurship to investment management? What transferable skills can you highlight? Have you worked on financial modeling or budget forecasting that supports your finance pivot? How will an MBA specifically help you scale your venture or shift to a global platform?

With the right positioning, resilience, impact, entrepreneurial hustle, and future focus on sustainable global infrastructure, you can stand out. Let the application reflect the ambition and the grounded strategy to achieve it. If you'd like, feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hi @DPMAV,

You have a standout entrepreneurial story with strong leadership in the renewable energy space, founding and scaling an EPC firm delivering 100+ projects is a major achievement that shows initiative, vision, and resilience. Your transition from systems engineering to clean energy entrepreneurship demonstrates strong upward mobility and purpose. The extracurriculars - UN volunteering, sports at state/university level, and political organizing add further depth and character to your profile.

The main challenge will be your low GPA (2.9), so a strong GMAT score (ideally 685+) will be crucial to demonstrate academic readiness. You can also use optional essays to contextualize your GPA.

Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements/tangible impact, relevant skills, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools.
