Profile Evaluation: Indian Male / 4.5 YOE / Business Proprietor & Tech Builder / Target: INSEAD, LBS, HEC Paris, ISB

Hello everyone,

I am planning to apply to top-tier international and Indian MBA programs for the upcoming intakes. I would deeply appreciate a candid evaluation of my profile, my competitiveness for management consulting roles, and advice on my school selection.

Personal & Academic Background

Nationality: Indian Male

Bachelor’s Degree: Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering, Tezpur University (Tier 3 college)

Undergrad GPA: 8.22/10 CGPA
Class 12 (CBSE): 90.8%
Class 10 (CBSE): 9.0 CGPA / 10
GMAT Focus Edition: Currently preparing, targeting 705 (99th percentile equivalent)

Alternative Academic Test (CAT): 98.2 percentile overall, with a 99.57 percentile in the Quantitative Aptitude section (out of ~300,000 takers).

Professional Experience

I have approximately 4 years of non-traditional, highly entrepreneurial experience across business operations, technology delivery, and independent software development.

Proprietor & Operations Manager, Family Business: I run operations management for our family enterprise. In this role, I manage end-to-end procurement workflows, supply chain mechanics, and high-stakes compliance while interfacing with massive government entities, including the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Bank of Baroda (BoB).

AI Automation & Technical Upskilling: To directly counter severe operational inefficiencies in my day-to-day business environment, I independently taught myself AI automation and engineered custom automated workflows using n8n. To further bridge business and deep tech, I am currently mastering DevOps and plan to expand into MLOps. My objective is to deeply understand AI infrastructure deployment lifecycles and cloud cost-optimization from both a technical and financial/commercial standpoint.

Independent Tech Solutions Delivery: I co-founded a venture that built and delivered custom software and tech solutions for international clients across Australia, the US, and Canada, managing client acquisition, scoping, and implementation.

Campus Food Delivery App (Undergrad Venture): Noticing a complete lack of food delivery infrastructure on my college campus, I took initiative during the COVID-19 lockdown to learn Flutter. I built and launched a functional Android food delivery app in 15 days. I personally onboarded roughly 40% of local neighborhood restaurants and drove operations to reach an average daily order value of ₹2,500.

Deliberate Deferral of IIT Bombay MBA Admit (2024): I secured an admission offer to the MBA program at IIT Bombay in 2024. However, I made a conscious, strategic decision not to join. That campus is highly renowned for operations roles; because I was already managing real-world operations as a business proprietor, I recognized that it would be far more valuable to continue executing in the real market rather than stepping back into a classroom to specialize in the exact same field.

Leadership & Extracurricular Activities

Community Leadership: Served as the NSS Department Head during my undergraduate years, where I structured and executed 10+ campus initiatives, overseeing logistics and crowd coordination for an average student participation of over 120+ people.

High-Impact Mentorship: Dedicated 35+ hours across 21 intensive, structured one-on-one sessions in a single month to mentor an undergraduate student, successfully guiding them to secure an internship.

NGO Volunteering: Active volunteer with the Team Everest NGO for 1.5 years, participating in 20+ community service and impact events.

Hobbies: Meticulous V60 filter coffee brewer (experimented with 30+ recipes last year by tweaking grind sizes, temperature, and pouring variables) and an avid fragrance collector (currently owning 15+ curated bottles with a target of expanding to 100+).

Career Goals

Short-Term Goal: Management Consulting (targeting MBB or Tier 2 consulting firms). I want to synthesize my hands-on experience as a business proprietor, my exposure to complex government frameworks, and my technical foundation in AI automation to solve high-impact strategy and operational problems for global clients.

Long-Term Goal: I am flexible on geography, but I would ideally like to work internationally or in Europe for a few years to absorb the frameworks of highly developed markets. Eventually, I aim to leverage this global exposure to scale my own tech-operations venture, utilizing advanced cloud architecture and MLOps to drive massive operational efficiency.

Target Schools

INSEAD
London Business School (LBS)
HEC Paris
Indian School of Business (ISB)

Areas Where I Would Appreciate Feedback

1. Unconventional Background Fit: How do top-tier admissions committees (especially INSEAD/LBS/IESE) view an applicant who is a proprietor of a family business paired with independent international tech delivery, rather than a candidate from a blue-chip corporate background?

2. Consulting Narrative Strength: Given my transition from civil engineering to running business operations and building AI automations, does my profile present a logical, compelling story for a pivot into elite Management Consulting?

3. GMAT & Academic Offsets: Coming from a Tier 3 undergraduate institution, will a 705 GMAT Focus score combined with my 99.57 Quant / 98.2 overall CAT percentiles and my prior IIT Bombay admission offer effectively eliminate any concerns regarding academic rigor?

4. School Strategy: How should I balance my application strategy between the 1-year European programs (INSEAD), the flexible European programs (LBS/IESE), and ISB in India given my career goals?

Thank you in advance for your time, insights, and guidance!

Hi Prashant, I am an INSEAD alumna and former MBA admissions interviewer. If you have only worked in your family business, your experience would carry more weight if you could speak to these things

What changed because of you?
What negotiations have you led?
What contracts have you managed?
What operational crises have you solved?
What efficiencies have you created?
Did you grow the business?
Did you professionalize processes?
Did you enter new markets, new geographies, How?
Did you digitize anything?
Did you improve margins?

The rest of the profile is alright, but I would be more interested to know the status of your Independent Tech Solutions Delivery business. Where is it at currently and what success have you achieved with it? Feasibility of Management consulting goals also depends on the industry depth you bring with you. Feel free to speak for a detailed profile evaluation as in the write up there may be lot of context missing still.

Feel free to get a free profile evaluation and discuss your MBA plan

Thanks for sharing your profile, @Prashant Verma. Your profile is unusual in a good way. Top schools like INSEAD, LBS, HEC Paris, and ISB are not looking for only consultants, bankers, and FAANG engineers, they are looking for leadership, impact, and differentiation. Running a family business, managing government-facing operations, building AI automations, delivering software solutions internationally, and launching a food-delivery app during college are all far more distinctive than the average applicant profile. The Tier-3 college is not the issue many applicants think it is; if you achieve a 705+ GMAT FE score, your 98.2 CAT percentile and IIT Bombay admit already demonstrate academic horsepower. The key question will be scale: What revenue, cost savings, operational improvements, contract values, client wins, or growth metrics can you quantify? You can also consider IESE, it appreciates entrepreneurial and non-traditional candidates.

Your consulting narrative is good. The story is, Operator > Builder > Consultant > Entrepreneur. You've experienced procurement, government contracts, operations, software development, automation, and client delivery firsthand. That creates a credible bridge into consulting, especially if you position consulting as a way to accelerate your exposure to different industries and strategic problem-solving before scaling larger ventures.

The biggest risk is sounding like you're collecting experiences rather than following a coherent path. Schools will ask: Why not continue growing your business? Why do you need consulting specifically? Why MBA now? The strongest answers will connect your exposure to operational inefficiencies, AI automation, and large-scale systems with your desire to advise organizations undergoing transformation. For school strategy, I'd prioritize INSEAD and ISB if consulting is the primary goal, while LBS and IESE offer more flexibility if entrepreneurship becomes more prominent. Given the current recruiting environment, firms increasingly value candidates with operating experience, which works in your favor.

Before applying, focus on 3 things:
1. Lock in the highest GMAT possible,
2. Quantify business impact everywhere, and
3. Develop stronger leadership stories around people management, influence, and decision-making.

Questions I'd push you on in essay development:
What is the annual scale of the family business?
How many employees or stakeholders do you influence?
What measurable outcomes came from your automations?
What happened to the food-delivery app after launch?
What client outcomes resulted from your software venture?
Why did you choose not to pursue IIT Bombay, and what did that decision teach you about leadership and risk-taking?

Most applicants tell schools what company they worked for. Very few can say they have negotiated with government entities, run business operations, built software, automated workflows, and launched ventures before turning 30. The challenge is whether you're positioning your profile as a collection of experiences or as evidence of a future founder-consultant capable of leading large-scale transformation.

You can take a look at these success stories: From Engineering to INSEAD with €40K Scholarship: Aayushman’s Journey | GMAT 710 Classic | Mr. AI Engineer (700 GMAT) got into INSEAD and HEC with scholarship. | Mr. Senior Associate (Banking Sector) Secures HEC Paris Admit with a 645 GMAT FE | Mr. Technical Consultant with a 710 GMAT got into IESE with a 25% Scholarship.

We would love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, work experience, international exposure and personal journey so that we can provide a tailored profile evaluation and an honest school assessment. Feel free to book an evaluation session.

Cheers!

Grad: 7.6 from SRM University

What are my odds of getting a 2nd MBA, and is there any chance of a GMAT or GRE waiver, considering I have shown quantitative aptitude during my Postgrad? Also, I will be sticking to PM roles post-MBA.

To address your question about GMAT waiver first, i think its better to avoid applying through that route as it will always a little more risky. If things work out for you then well and good, if they don't, then it will feel like a bad idea. You will have to take the GMAT for another attempt at applications, and you may have to apply as a reapplicant, which will be a drain on cost and effort. Also, your undegrad and masters grades are average and so it becomes crucial for you to show your academic capability. Additionally, with a high GMAT score, you can apply to a higher ranked list of programs

Profile wise, i see a lot of potential. Your work experience in agrotech combined with a masters degree in the same field suggest a career purpose which adcoms are likely to appreciate. You will need to ensure that your career goals tie in well with your past experience. This requires considerable thought and research of your target programs to build an understanding of post-MBA career opportunities.

Hi, some more details like what you studied for undergrad would help.
Your profile looks good otherwise. 5 years is substantial work experience to apply with. If you are in a support role ( delivering reports, assisting with industry assessment and thought leadership etc.)), you should still make sure that you are able to convey the $$$ impact of your contributions, as thats what helps create a strong resume. Secondly, with consulting as a goal, it will be helpful to demonstrate relevant transferable skills.
It seems you are still to take the GMAT. Work towards getting a higher score than 675 if thats your target.
It will be easier to assess your chances for these bschools once i have a better idea about your work experience. Feel free to reach out for a consultation.

Hi,

Thank you for the feedback — really helpful pointers.

To answer your question: I completed my Bachelor's in Engineering from a Tier 2 college in India.

A few quick clarifications on the areas you flagged:

Work experience & impact: My role goes beyond support — I work closely with stakeholders day-in-day-out, and at times lead engagements myself. I'm confident I can quantify the impact of my contributions in dollar terms on the resume.

Transferable skills: The skills I've built are very much a subset of the consulting ecosystem — stakeholder management, structured problem-solving, and industry assessments — so I feel well-positioned to frame these for consulting goals.

GMAT: I haven't taken it yet. Targeting a score well above 695.

Would love your assessment of my b-school chances once you have the full picture. Happy to connect for a consultation.

Thanks again!

Happy to know the details you have mentioned. I understand that profile evaluation messages can sometimes fall short on the details, but now i have a better picture.
Your experience is very relevant . As i mentioned in my earlier message, you will need to focus on the points i have mentioned earlier. Demonstrating leadership+ achievements + career purpose are the most crucial adpects in your applications. We can surely have a discussion, please write to me at [email protected]

Hi, hope you are doing great! I am an INSEAD alumna, a former INSEAD MBA admissions interviewer, and specialize in EU MBA programs.

To begin with, your experience trajectory is not clear to me. Did you do risk advisory first or supply chain first? You will have to find a strong underlying theme in your work experience and connect your career decisions through that thread with intentionality.

I have had a fairly long career in supply chain and operations, and I routinely help MBA applicants from supply chain, procurement, and operations backgrounds prepare for top business schools with targeted post-MBA strategies. So I can tell you that depth in this field is very much needed to make the AdCom firmly believe in your potential, because this is one area that requires a very strong analytical mindset and a focused understanding of how an industry operates.

If you are targeting MBB firms, please also note that these companies want to hire talent with deep-rooted experience in specific industries where their clients come from. The more industry exposure or strong brand associations you can demonstrate in your essays and resume, supported by a solid knowledge foundation, the stronger your positioning will be in the admissions process.

An international focus is definitely a plus, but it is not really a differentiator for INSEAD anymore. It is more of a baseline eligibility criterion.

Should you want to discuss your profile in detail, feel free to reach out.

Feel free to get a free profile evaluation and discuss your MBA plan

Beyond the obvious aspects of GPA and GMAT/GRE scores, you should focus strongly on your narratives re 'Why from healthcare to MBA to consulting?' ' AdComs would care less about your patient care metrics and more about how you led when the stakes are organizational (rather than clinical). Pharma titles are confusing and do not translate neatly to a business school's model of career progression. Focus on how your experiences can add value to the classroom. There isn't much else in your post to offer a meaningful profile review.

Your work-ex (assuming it's 3 years as of matriculation?) is on the lower side for most MBA programs, particularly M7's. Have you considered applying next year?

Thanks for the evaluation. Yes, I understand I have low work experience. But I do not want to target M7 in particular, especially the US. I want to stick to Europe / UK / Singapore. Besides, I wanted to understand if it is actually possible to opt for an MBA post 3 years of work experience or is it necessary to stick longer.

If you can wait a year more and gain more experience, that'd be advisable. But if the quality of your work-ex (key achievements at work, career progression) and the overall profile (international exposure, extracurriculars etc.) are strong, you could consider applying this year.

Another strategic option would be to test the waters this year (i.e. apply to a few schools) so open yourself up to the best-case scenario, and have a fallback option (i.e. apply next year) if it doesn't work out.

A strong GMAT/ GRE score will be essential to compensate for the lower work-ex though.

Arvind (Founder, admitStreet)

Be ambitious but not in a rush. Arvind is putting it politely - postpone your application to when you have 4+ years of experience. You may get in with less, but when you get out, you may face challenges in recruitment.
Since you're an Indian, also be aware that cracking jobs in SGP has become very difficult since the Singaporean government prioritizes hiring locals. For the EU, you will need local language skills.

I totally agree with you, Arvind and Dee, thanks for your responses!
The problem is - I am also fiddling with a Consulting job here in Japan, which I feel is adding very minimal value to my life. Switching is tough here due to language constraints. So I felt the best way out could be going for an MSc (instead of a full-time MBA) would also be a better choice than sticking to a consulting job in Japan.
Any thoughts on that?

You should be running towards something, not away from something. If you take decisions to run away, you are bound to make mistakes. An MSc is a specialization track; an MBA is a general management program. What do you exactly 'need' (not 'want')? The way I see it, "Indian female with work experience in Japan and who, besides working in consulting, also took the effort to learn the Japanese language" is a far better story to sell to MBA AdComs than anything else. How many Indian profiles will AdComs get who come with stints in Japan?

If you don't wish to learn the Japanese language, don't fool yourself by saying that you will learn a European language during/post-MBA in the EU.

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, at this stage, it's a bit difficult to evaluate your chances because there isn't enough information about your academics, work experience, and extracurricular activities.

One thing to keep in mind is that with only 1 year of work experience, you're still quite early for most full-time MBA programs. MiM programs like HEC Paris MiM, ESSEC Business School, and IE Business School are likely to be a more natural fit at this stage.

Could you share a bit more about:
1. Your academic background (college, GPA)
2. Your current role in media/entertainment
3. Any internships, leadership positions, or extracurricular activities
4. Your long-term career goals

That would make it much easier to give a meaningful profile evaluation.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!

No pressure, no strings - just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.

Your motivations for MBA and career goals post-MBA have not been stated. Hence, I am assuming you intend to return to consulting. Re EU, if you are aiming to work in that region, be aware of the importance of local language skills. While you may study the MBA program in English, to secure, survive, and thrive in a job, you will need the language. Plus, there is a high probability that your Indian passport may prove a handicap to the cross-border mobility expected of any consultant in the EU. No school, no recruiter will call this out to you.
If you are aiming for R1 2026 applications, then you are cutting it fine. You may not have factored in the need to retake the GMAT. Do not underestimate the labor that goes into strong applications and can take 2-3 months easily.
Lastly, without the final GMAT score in hand, any school selection will be flawed to some extent. Your due diligence and research on every school should be done only when you have filtered them on essential points of compatibility.

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks strong on the surface. What stands out to me is the combination of strong academics and a solid consulting background. A strong CGPA from a top Delhi University college shows you've consistently performed well academically.

On the work side, having experience across multiple industries before moving into Financial Services gives you both breadth and depth. That's something many schools appreciate because it shows versatility while also allowing you to develop expertise in a specific area.

Have you had opportunities to lead workstreams or mentor junior team members?
Where do you see yourself after consulting in the long run?

I also like that you've been involved in PRIDE and sustainability initiatives. Those experiences help show who you are beyond client work and add another dimension to your profile.

A 705+ GMAT would put you in a very strong position for your target schools. Combined with your academics and consulting experience, it would help round out an already competitive profile. The next step is making sure your applications highlight not just what you've done, but the impact you've had and where you want to go next.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!

No pressure, no strings - just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.
