Wow. That’s a strong profile!
CPG has gotten a bit of a bad name in NBA because the average pay is so much slower than consulting and tech. However, as someone who had a 15 year career in hospitality and CPG similar industry, I can say that while the average pay is not great, there are definitely niche opportunities and and senior management opportunities that make someone passionate about CPG not too worried about breaking even.

PS. Historically, Kellogg has been the strongest CPG school. Fantastic results with getting interview invite at HBS. Ross is another CPG school but a bit below the M7 mark. Columbia maybe if you would like to stay in New York.

Thanks for posting the profile and updating decision tracker results 👍

My GPA is kind of around 3.3 too. I just got a GMAT score of 660... so I'm considering retaking it. If you don't mind, could you share what would be a good goal for GMAT and what your application experience was like? (I'm open to PM if you'd rather not post them here!)

I have 5 years of sales experience combined at BYJU'S (Edtech), OYO (Hospitality) and Disney Star, and and 2.5 years in Product & Revenue Strategy role at Disney Star (Walt Disney India Business).

My college (SASTRA University) GPA was 7.3 / 10, although my college is very strict in grading. It's all India #34 ranked and #6 in Tamil Nadu. I scored 94.4 and 94.2% in 10th and 12th respectively.
Received 1 promotion in OYO and 1 promotion in Disney Star. GMAT score = 700 (Q47, V38)
No social work experience.
Short term goal: Management Consulting / Product Management in Tech.
Long term goal: Entrepreneurship in Sports / Education focusing beyond Metros.
Colleges: US T20
Applied in R2 for 2024 intake: Rejects from ISB and NUS.
Applied for 4 US colleges: Haven't heard back from UCLA Anderson and USC Marshall.
Gave interview with Foster (Awaiting result) and Mccombs (Peer interview) - Awaiting result.

If I do not get any admissions, I am thinking I should position my profile more for Management Consulting (Gave short term goal as product management for all applications) and I am thinking to write GMAT Focus and try for a 740+ equivalent.
From your experience, please suggest what should I improve to get into top 20 colleges in 2025.

Hello Santhosh,

You have an interesting profile. Let's tick a few boxes here from your profile -
1. Previous Work Experience
7.6 years of work experience is a good amount of experience for an MBA applicant. Your experience in sales, product and revenue strategy, and business development is relevant to your post-MBA goals.
2. Post MBA Goals
Your post-MBA goals of working for an internet-based business and eventually starting your own tech, media, or education company are well-defined and aligned with your experience and interests. Leveraging your skills in Strategy & Sales experience could be a good approach to initially start a career in consulting before you take up entrepreneurship
3. GMAT Score
You have a decent GMAT Score, but it would be a bit competitive when you're looking at top business schools in US
4. International Exposure & Volunteering Experience
You have not mentioned any international experience in your profile. This could be considered a weakness by some admissions committees, as many top MBA programs value international exposure & community engagement.

Additional Tips
1. Keep options for other colleges either specialised in Entrepreneurship or those that have consulting placements
2. Make sure your application essays are well-written and highlight your strengths.
3. Get strong letters of recommendation from people who know you well and can speak to your accomplishments.
4. Practice for your MBA interviews so that you can make a good impression on the admissions committee.

Please feel free to reach out to me in case you need any more information or guidance.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I have updated my write up to add some more information. Would you suggest any colleges in US where my profile can have above average chances of getting in? What are the odds to get into these colleges: Duke Fuqua, Marshall, Mccombs, Foster and ISB.

Hi Santhosh, hope you are doing great!
You have a very solid profile because you have some of the best brand associations on your resume from the startup space as well as the media tech domain. I would have liked to know the breakdown of your 700 score on the GMAT. Having a Q49+ gives much assurance to the adcoms regarding your relative academic capabilities in the very competitive Indian demographic if they love your profile. The gmat becomes even more critical at top tier schools like Duke and Haas where there will also be someone with a better profile stat for the last remaining seat. I hope you understand how important then it is to establish a rapport with the alumni and the admissions team pre application to gather insights on what makes the target school a great fit for you and how you in your capacity would add a unique perspective to the class.
Regarding your long term goals, I would advise you to not name all the possible industries you can think of. Narrow down your message to the core values that you seek in your work area in the long term. Think what kind of work would make you happy and feel fulfilled at the same time. As an entrepreneur you would like be driven by a passion to build your tech business. If you have an idea what you truly feel passionate about, speak about it. Then go on to justify how certain roles in the next few years would provide you the right exposure to take on bigger responsibilities later in your career. Adcoms are looking for genuine responses. I dont think Anderson is a long shot. Haas and Duke definitely are. ISB is well within reach too if you execute your application and interviews well.

Should you want guidance on the applications or the interviews feel free to connect.

Hello @hrcshnt!

You could opt for a lot more colleges if you're looking for Msc In Finance.
I would advise you to look for colleges in France as well since some of the top ranked colleges in Finance are from there.

After completing my undergraduate degree in B.Tech Computer Science & Engineering from a Tier 3 institute in India, with a plethora of leadership activities (founded a club, led and organised multiple events, participated and led teams in project presentation conferences and exhibitions, organised community outreach events to help under-priviledged high school level students inculcate a scientific acumen) and community work, I'm looking to apply for the top B-schools in the US for a Full-time MBA.

With 2 years of full-time work experience (at matriculation) in the IT service industry (Cognizant Technology Solutions), post-graduation, along with 6 months of full-time internship experience in software development, I feel I am prepared for an MBA to pursue a career in the line of my passion, that is management and consulting. With the blend of leadership aptitude, academic excellence and a zeal for making a change in the world, I think an MBA at this point in my career will really help me focus myself in the path to the success that I aspire for.

Currently working as the business analyst and personal secretary to the chairman of the bank. I analyze all the files submitted to the board of directors. Also, I am responsible for organizing the board meetings.

Before that, I worked at one of the branches of the bank as a credit analyst. I developed a reputation of being an expert in analyzing financial statements and took classes on financial statements to educate my colleagues.

I led the development of two completely new income streams for the branch, i) A loan product, and ii) A deposit product.

Before being a banker I was a sales manager in the biggest paint manufacturing company in the country. There I led a 4-member-team and achieved yearly sales growth of 11.47% which were higher than the national growth.

I have a 18 month gap between my 1st job and 2nd job though. I had to leave my 1st job because my father health deteriorated a lot and being the eldest son of the family, I had to take responsibilities.

Hi. I think you got the right schools. The only other finance and IB programs would be Columbia and Stern but very expensive cost of living in NY City.

Otherwise I think you are in target. Would recommend starting to reach out to some of the current students (if you have not already) and trying to connect. It will be tricky as they are busy but if you have good strong and interesting questions you will be able to get them talking. These relationships will be very valuable in the long run.

Hi @Aloop,
While the schools shortlisted by you are in complete sync with your career prospects, your GRE score is on the lower side with regard to your target schools; of course, your test score is only a component of your overall application; however, it is still an extremely crucial component.
All the best!

Thank you. I have also applied with an EA score of 148 which I'm guessing is again on the lower side. Unfortunately for me, your analysis just proves to show that even though universities claim that they see the application holistically, standardised test score is clearly the only thing that matters. I'm certainly not the whole package, but I have my strengths. I hope that I've demonstrated the same in my application. Fingers crossed.

Your career goals are clear, and you have substantial work experience in the tech and IT industry. A GRE score of 304 is on the lower side for many top MBA programs. While these programs are becoming more flexible in terms of standardized test scores, it's essential to check each school's specific requirements and whether they have a GMAT/GRE optional policy. A GPA of 3.2 is slightly below the average for admitted students at top MBA programs. However, it's not significantly below, and your work experience may help compensate for this. Make sure to highlight your academic strengths and achievements in other parts of your application.

Your 8.2 years of work experience, particularly in the tech industry, is a significant asset. It demonstrates your industry expertise, leadership potential, and your understanding of the tech sector, which aligns well with your goal of transitioning into product management roles.

Your transition from IT consulting to product management is a logical one given your background. Be sure to articulate why an MBA is necessary to make this transition and how each specific program you're applying to can help you achieve this goal.

Being an Indian female in a tech-heavy field adds diversity to your profile, which many MBA programs value. Highlight how your unique perspective and experiences can contribute to the school's community. Strong, specific, and supportive letters of recommendation can significantly bolster your application.

If you have leadership or impactful involvement in extracurricular activities, whether in your current job or outside of work, be sure to showcase this as it demonstrates your leadership and community engagement.

When considering these programs, take into account each school's average GRE scores, class profile, and your fit with their culture and resources. While your GRE score might be below their averages, it's not impossible to gain admission, especially if you excel in other areas of your application and can effectively communicate your career goals and how the MBA will help you achieve them. Consider applying to a mix of reach, match, and safety schools to increase your chances of admission.

Feel free to schedule a free profile evaluation call with us to discuss your profile better and give a fair evaluation of your chances of admission to top Business schools.

148 EA is about 40th percentile. Both the GRE and EA seem on the lower side. Sorry... I would apply with both frankly, as schools care LESS about EA in terms of rankings impact. It does not get anywhere but there is a very low chance of a scholarship. Just heads up.

I said that if you have apply with these scores, I would submit both. Are these great scores to apply? not really.... but I don't want to tell you the world's most obvious thing and that you need to retake but it would help quite a bit if you could improve them.

I was hoping some stories transcend numbers and to convince Stanford of the same! If not, I am beyond lucky and grateful to have hit 3/4 with 3 of the other best schools in the world <3

Not really sure, if you are asking for advice, or telling us of your admits to have hit 3/4 with 3 of the other best schools in the world.
That said, with your GPA, high work-ex, and not so stellar GRE, you indeed have challenges in convincing AdComs of your Academic Calibre; If you have been able to get those admissions, your applications have had that compelling story, told with a genuine touch, and the convincing power to have the AdComs agree to take a risk on you.

Wishing you the best of luck ahead...
